Franco: Thank you so much for your prompt reply! I have decided that Via Arco del Monte it is--walking distance to many good places. They say they have double-glazed windows so I hope that keeps out the noise. Your thread helped so much in keeping me firm on staying in this area or "south" Trastevere. I am right by the Ponte Sisto, so I can walk across and see what I am missing over there across the Tiber. Buona notte!

Hi, just came across another couple of 3 bedroom apt available on our dates Apt Helios (has anyone rented this?) - http://www.romecityapartments.com/default_new.aspx
Then I went through this thread to see if there was any mention of the street one is on - Via della Stelletta, But could not find any. Since it is more north (from what I can figure in the map!)of the areas in Campo de Fiori & Piazza Navona we were considering originally, just wanted to get any opinions on this area/apt as well.
The other one is in Trastevere which I know is an area you like Franco, the website is http://www.vrbo.com/226727 and it is on Via Natale del Grande. What do you think of that particular location & which of these 2 locations would be preferable?
Thanks again for your valuable advice.

Hi excited
the link you provide for the first one is to a one-bed apartment, not 3 beds.
I much prefer the look of the trastevere one, but defer to Franco as to which would be preferable.
i can't remember how long you are staying in Rome- if a week or so, I'd be inclined to the Trastevere one anyway; if only 3 days, the other may be preferable as it's closer to the things that you'd want to see in 3 days.
if you're there for a week, IMHO it doesn't matter quite so much that it takes you longer to get places, or at least that was what we found when we stayed for a wek in the Monti area.
regards, ann

Another neighborhood question (hopefully a final one)for Franco, Ann, Zerlina and others who may know this area - what do you know about via Arco della Pace near Piazza Navona? Is it a nice neighborhood to stay in? It is between via dei Coronari and via della Pace at the Santa Maria della Pace church. Google maps does not allow me to see the street view of that via since it stops near the church at via della Pace. Thanks again.

excited, Via della Stelletta (no, it has never been mentioned so far on this thread) is in a nice area, as well, the same I was discussing recently when Via di Monte Brianzo came up - but Via della Stelletta is certainly quiet, other than Monte Brianzo.
Of course, I totally side with Ann that Via Natale del Grande is far preferable. In one of the nicest parts of Trastevere (the market is just around the corner), and as far as public traffic, you know, superior to most part of Rome, as mentioned often on this thread.
Marianna, Via Arco della Pace is in a particularly beautiful neighbourhood, vivid in the evenings, also crowded sometimes, but this is an elegant, noble kind of nightlife (no rowdies!). And the tiny square in front of S. Maria della Pace is of course one of this world's most important baroque creations...

Franco what area would you suggest for me and my elderly Mom. I was thinking of 11Terrazzino in Via Natale del Grande, since the neighborhood sounds so nice. Is there nearby transportation to get around? We only have one night and leaving for Civitavecchio the next day.

I have read the entire thread - I'm a newbie so please forgive. When you say "south trastevere " please define that area - could you provide some boundaries?
VRBO apartment # 156961 - is that considered "south" - I would assume not by looking at the map - Is the east side of the Viale di Trastevere better than the west side?
I have found some on rentinitaly but they seem farther out - although I don't have a good concept of the scale - one on Via Filippo Casini - is that to far out?
Thanks so much for your help.

Good question. Actually, it's the southern AND eastern part of Trastevere - down the river, or down Viale Trastevere. Which makes the preferable area:
1. in the north of the district, the part east of Viale Trastevere
and 2. everything south of Via Luciano Manara, never mind whether west or east of Viale Trastevere.
I don't see any address for the VRBO apartment, but if it's really 50 metres from S. Maria, then it's not in the desirable part of Trastevere.
I wouldn't say that Via F. Casini is too far south. For me, the southern part is ok as long as it's inside the walls.

Franco: the vrbo apt. is at Vicolo del Leopardo. also found #279 in romanreference.com - any ideas? It took me forever to post this - everytime I went to this thread my computer froze up!
thanks for your assistance. Maybe not knowing the neighborhoods at all we would be better off staying in the Santa Maria hotel - although I would prefer apt. if I can get comofortable

So my guess was right: that's not the part of Trastevere that makes me love Trastevere. But of course, that's a matter of taste, and if you love bustling streetlife until late below your windows, you'll be fine there (it's actually not an unpleasant kind of nightlife there). Personally, I'd stick to Via Filippo Casini.

Franco, thanks so much for all the helpful info you've given. I've narrowed my choices to some apartments whose locations haven't been mentioned on the board. I'll be traveling with my husband, and we're in our late 20s/early 30s. I like staying in quiet areas that are within walking distance of restaurants, so that we could safely take a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood after dinner. We're from NYC. Can you comment on these locations?
Toniolo (near San Luigi dei Francesi)

I know you're a big fan of Trastavere. Do you think we'd be better off staying there?

Sakura, both apartments are close to the Pantheon, so that's of course another great neighbourhood - one of Rome's most beautiful. Walking distance from restaurants helps nothing to decide whether near the Pantheon or in Trastevere, since (good) restaurants are in walking distance in both areas. It's simply a matter of taste which one to prefer... The Pantheon neighbourhood is definitely more beautiful than Trastevere, much more touristy (thinking of "my" quiet part of Trastevere), much more upscale. Trastevere, to me, feels more like real life, real Rome, real people, the Pantheon neighbourhood in its incredible beauty more out-of-this-world, and a slice of heaven is not that bad either, is it?

Ah yes, and between the two apartments, I'd prefer Via Monterone as far as traffic connections (style and price of the apartments aside, that's up to you). Via Monterone is so close to Largo Argentina, that's really convenient.

Is it unrealistic to look for an apartment for 2 people in Trastevere for under 1300 euros a month? I'm thinking of going to Istaly (most likely Rome) for 1-2 months next year, and all the usual websites like "SleepinRome", "RentalinRome" have apartments which rent for 800-900euros per week!
I'm looking for something cheaper. A studio apartment would be just fine. Thanks
