There is a Logis de France in Compiegne, the name of which escapes me although I do remember it had "Chat" in the name somewhere! Basically it's in a 17th Century building and is probably the most unusual hotel I have ever stayed in. The walls are covered not with wallpaper but with a padded material, and there are huge wooden beams in the ceilings. It's also not always easy to find the doors to the bathrooms, as these tend to be covered in material too!

That said, I've stayed there twice and would definately go back again. There is a restaurant attached to it which is typical of the Logis chain - excellent traditional French food at good prices. The breakfast is also huge - everything from melon and cornflakes to smoked sausage and cheese.

Found the details of the hotel I was talking about!

Hôtel de France
17, rue Eugène Floquet
Tél : 03 44 40 02 74
Fax : 03 44 40 48 37

It's right in the middle of the town near the Mairie and within walking distance of the station. It was the restaurant which had "chat" in the title - "La Rotisserie du Chat qui Tourne."

Harvey,
Consider the Hostellerie du Royal Lieu, 9 rue de Senlis, 60200, Compeigne. It's a charming inn; rooms overlook a lovely garden as does the restaurant which features superb food. The inn is on the outskirts of town near the forest. The proprietors are members of Les Cuisiniers et Hoteliers; Angelo Bonechi is the chef, his wife the proprietress of the inn.

Tel: 44 20 10 24; Fax: 44 86 82 27
