France and Italy

I'm an experienced senior traveler but tired of doing this myself. Can anyone recommend a service that helps with bookings - air, hotels, trains. We are planning on multiple cities in France and Italy

Yes - it's called a group tour and there are zillions around. Don't have to lift a finger but you have to take their itinerary. Travel agents will book everything for you on your own but at much higher rates than you could do in a few hours online at home.

easy to book airlines - hotels - thru services like expedia, etc if want - trains so easy to book at discounted rates to boot- see www.seat61.com for advice on easily doing that yourselves from home online - general info trains BETS-European Rail Experts and www.ricksteves.com.

But if do not want to do yourself find one of the dwindling number of travel agents to do it for you. Most will charge a fee these days.

Perhaps Untours would work for you. "All the fun of independent travel, but with the planning, service, and on-site support of a tour."

You should be able to find a travel consultant just by Googling for that, adding the words "France Italy". Most travel consultants, for a fee, will book your hotels, make restaurant recommendations, recommend an itinerary and book the transport. They will often book train or car rental for you. They probably will ask you to book your own air tickets -- but maybe some even do that. Some of them simply charge by the hour. Others tend to have set fees for how much or little you want in terms of service. (For instance, a customized tour where they book tour guides and activities for you as well as restaurants, etc, will probably cost more than working up a recommended itinerary with recommended restaurants, plus booking hotels and ground transport.

It used to be that you could find these people hanging around message forums, like this one. They might still hang out on the "Slow Europe" forum, or if you check there you might at least get some personal recommendations. I don't have any personal experience to share, but here's the kind of service I'm talking about (I just found this on Google with the search I described, so it's not a recommendation, just an example)

Travel agencies still exist. I live in a large urban area, so a quick google search found at least a dozen located nearby. But, unless you must sit across a desk from an agent, you don't even have to live in the same city as a good travel agent who can help you by telephone, email, etc. You'll have to pay for services, but they should be able to make recommendations satisfying your budget and other parameters and to book everything. I do believe in being an informed customer, however, so I would investigate all hotel recommendations, etc., before committing to any reservation.

If you're a AAA member, you can check to see if one of their travel agents in your local branch or online can book all of the elements of the trip you're considering. I don't think members are charged any fees for this. Again, I would investigate hotel recommendations before committing to any reservation.

Still looking for help but may do it myself.
Bologna was on our itinerary but my wife has found some negative comments abut this city. Any advice about Bologna?

Bologna "the red city" is a vibrant student city, with many ancient covered ways (so providing student accomodation over the pavements) which offer shade in summer and dryness in winter. For Italy it is a big city but I've never heard negative points about it. If you are using the trains then it is a local hub for all the little cities around.
1) What has your wife read?
2) if you let us know we can suggest either it is over-egged or an alternative city in the same area to base.

Finding "some negative comments" about any slice of territory on earth is largely irrelevant to planning a trip. You don't know the predilections of the people who post "negative" comments, and if you've never been to the place you can't have any impressions of your own.

Bologna is a big, wonderful city, with some attractions (food, e.g.) that draw thousands of visitors. Any decent guidebook would tell you what else there is to attract visitors. Is it a standout among possible Italian venues? That depends on what your priorities are.

If you are just poking around and looking at comments on the internet about various places to visit in Italy, that cannot be counted as researching a trip. Either get deeply involved in it yourselves or hire someone to advise you.

Well duh To find any city on Earth without any negative comments . . . It would have to be in North Korea where they off you for negative comments.

What specifically is your wife concerned about. Then we can address those issues.

To me, Bologna is one of the very nicest old historic town centers anywhere - can't really imagine what would be terribly negative about it.
