FOUQUET'S IN PARIS

I"ve only been there for drinks, and my impression is that it's a great high profile place to people watch and have a glass of wine. I may be mistaken, but I've never heard rave reviews of its food. I think one goes there for its address, etc., and that's pretty nifty!

I too can't give it much praise for the food quality, especially given the prices which are high. The food was okay though, and it's a place to have a drink or lunch, if you want to splurge. Perhaps you already know this, but just in case you didn't, for some reason the name of this place is<BR>pronounced "Foo-kets", contrary to usual pronunciation rules.

We ate there on our last night in Paris because we wanted to spend the last few hours on the Champs Elysses. The food was not spectacular, but we did think it was fairly good, even if a little overpriced. In other words, I wouldn't go there for the food but the location.

I've had a cup of coffee or something there, haven't dined. It's too expensive and not my kind of place, and I'm rarely in that area. I have read that the reason for the odd pronunciation is just that at one time, maybe when the cafe started around the turn of the century, it was fashionable to affect British names and pronunciation--British was in, believe it or not. Henry James used to hang out at Fouquet's supposedly, it was before my time. That explains some of the other British names in Paris, also, I believe, but I don't know the full history on that--like why they'd name a hotel Queen Mary or Warwick's in Paris.
