My recollection is that both chateaux required guided tours. That was 11 years ago, but I suspect that if anything, visitors are more and more kept on a leash. The trompe l'oeil ceiling makes it worth a visit. In those days photography was allowed.

We visited perhaps 20 chateau in the area - and I think only 2 were self guided - Chateauneuf & Pierreclos. The brochure "Route des Ducs de Bourgogne" says that Chateauneuf tours are guided - but I'm pretty sure you can see it on your own also. It actually looks better from the outside than inside. If you plan to tour this chateau, let me know & I'll look through my wife's diary to confirm the self guided tour.
Our favorite in the region was Cormatin - very nice garden also.

Make sure you get a copy of the '07 version of the "Route des Ducs de Bourgogne" just to make sure that there are not any time changes from '06 to '07. Also, get a copy of "Route des Chateaux en Bourgogne du Sud" if you plan on visiting any chateaux south of Beaune.

I forgot to mention something. When you buy a ticket for your first chateau visit for chateaux listed on the "Route des Ducs de Bourgogne" brochure, save the ticket. You will get a 1-2 Euro discount on subsequent chateaux. You will need the Euros to pay for the obscenely priced Burgundys in that region (Beaujolais are much more reasonable).
