FLYING FROM MADRID TO BARCELONA

We are flying internationally with luggage allowances from new york. now we want to fly from madrid to barcelona but realize that we now have new luggage limits and requirements. i would like to use Iberia cause we can use miles for the trip. Anyone know how rigid they are with check thru and carry on luggage limits?

Are you having a stopover in Madrid or just transfering to a flight in Madrid to Barcelona? If it is the latter I think that the international lugagge limits will apply. However, if you are making a stopover in Madrid , the domestic rules will apply.

we are staying 4 nights in Madrid before going to Barcelona. Do you have any info about taking a train? I have been advised that domestic luggage limits will apply for the domestic hop. Do you know how strict Iberia is on weight ( size is the same). One option, if weight will be an issue is to upgrade to business class but seems like a lot of money for a few pounds of extra weight.

I'd call Iberia, but if you're more than 10Kg over, I'm afraid you'll have to pay. For train check renfe.es, it takes 4 hours or so.

Who "advised" you about the luggage limits? Iberia? If yes, then the train might be a better option BUT my question would be how MUCH over the usual 20KG limit are you going to be and would it be worth it to pay the excess charge?

There are luggage limits on Iberia as with most other carriers in Spain. If you are flying business, or happen to be a member of their premium flyer program (American Airways is their partner) then they will generally overlook a minor weight problem if flying coach.

There are no weight limits on Renfe and you will arrive in the city, not out at the airport and have to pay for a taxi into the city (about 25€ with the surcharge).

It’s always much easier when you can travel from city center to city center on the train, in this case about 5 hours, which may involve less time the flying when you consider the time spent traveling to and from the airports, checking in early (60 to 90 minutes depending on the date and time of your flight) and getting through security.
