It really depends a lot on where you're traveling to and from.
www.applefares.com searches quite a few of the discount airlines.
www.lowcostairlines.org lists the sites for each airline and will let you search
easyjet, ryanair, bmi and others are cheap options to or from the UK.

Also, to make sure that you are not missing any possibilities, find the website of the smaller of the 2 airports you wish to use, and check to see which airlines serve it. If you see one not on the list that the general airfare site showed, it might be worth it to go looking for that airline's homepage to check it directly. Seems like there is always some airline that will not sell through the broker sites.
