We were in Luxembourg about three weeks ago for two nights and enjoying spending the day seeing the city. Our friends from England flew into Lux to meet us (again, it was cheaper than Frankfurt). They took the bus in from the airport (short trip, frequent buses) to the train station, where we met them and then took the train to St. Goar, where we spent two nights. From there, we spent four nights in Bamberg (loved it!!), taking a day trip to Coburg. We next went to Munich for four nights and took two day trips: one to the Zugspitz and the other to Lake Konigsee. We had wanted to do a day trip to Salzburg but the trains have stopped running from Munich to Austria because of the refugee problem.

If you travel after 9am and before 3am and use only local transport, you can get really cheap train tickets in Germany. For example, a one-day pass for the four of us for unlimited transportation anywhere in Bavaria was 38 euros. Look for the lander tickets and something called "happy weekend" fares.

We flew into and out of Lux on a family trip using Icelandic. It was central to the beginning of our trip and a shortish train ride from Paris at the end. It worked out fine, and saved a lot of money on 5 tickets. I think you just have to look at it overall to see if it is worthwhile.

We probably make the whole trip by train>

Be sure to look at the German (Twin) Railpass if traveling by train that long - the more days on a pass you buy the cheaper they get - at some point being about as cheap as some day regional passes and letting you hop any train anytime with very few exceptions. If not on a tight budget consider a first-class pass - a real bargain vs fully flexible tickets and nothing to pre-arrange - just hop on the train - 20% discount or so on Rhine boats (used to be 100% covered).

Hi once again !

There's something else that showned up (i'm the one who initialised the thread) ! For 350 more than the return flight to Luxembourg we can have (Yul-Zurick-Lux) and22 days w later ( Lux-Zurich-Yul). That way we avoid on train leg of 6 hours (we still have to go from Munich To Lux but since we want to have 6-7 days in te Moselle region)....

The only thing that i'm asking myself is if it's agood idea to start our trip in Berlin. Maybe it will be the hilight of our trip and we do it right from the start. Would the rest ( Dresden, Nurmenberg, Munich, Salzbourg ans Moselle) will be boring after Berlin ?
