Fly into Rome and out of of VCE??

From the research that I've done so far I've seen that more people recommend starting off your trip by flying into Venice and leaving out of Rome. However, I've found that airfare is more reasonable flying into Rome and out of Venice. Any thoughts of which one is better? Thank you!

I've seen tons of debate on this very topic on the board just within the last month I've been lurking on the Italy message board. I think everyone has a different opinion about either resting or being romantic first/last in Venice or enjoying the bustle of Rome. I'd go with whatever your gut is telling you for your personal feelings. I didn't care which one to go first, so I went with Venice since it was cheaper for me and had better flights. (I found an early afternoon return trip home from Rome vs. very early AM from Venice).

We flew into Rome, stayed there 4 nights, then took the train to Venice and flew out of Venice. It worked out very well for us, and I really enjoyed arriving in the relative quiet of Venice after being in Rome. You will enjoy both no matter which order you ssee them in, so just take the flights that work out best for you.

I personally would go with the cheaper route. Some may think that it would be more relaxing to visit Venice first; I love Rome and don't really think its very hectic, but to each their own. But if one way is cheaper than the other, go for it.

Agree with the others - if you have a preference (we prefer to start with the hectic - like Rome - and end with the relaxing/romantic - like Venice) do that.

If it's a toss-up for you, go with the cheaper option.

The case is not to fly to Rome and to leave from Venice or the other way round. The point is to win time during your holiday if you make that kind of trip.

Kaygirl - my husband and I are flying into Rome and leaving from Venice this May. We too, had trouble deciding but then said we would rather start off in the busier city and end our vacation with the more relaxed one. I also read post after post on this subject and it does really come down to your own personal preference and the better flights. You'll make the right decision.

I can show you parts of Rome that would seem absolutely DEAD and aren't the least bit "hectic" or tourist-clogged, etc.

IMO it is a matter of perception and also of maximizing your vacation time.

Trust me, go to Venice and get on one of those vaporettos and you'll find all about "hectic."

Enjoy your trip.

Hi K,

If the fare is significantly less, and you don't have to leave Venice at 07:00, fly into Rome.
