Hello hypatia
As a general rule, the earlier in the season, the lower the flowers. Or, follow the cows! They love to munch on the flowers. We usually head to the B.O. in mid-July and have found the flowers blooming up higher on the hills by then. So I'd figure in May, they'd be lower. Although enzian reports prime season at Mannlichen in June. I'm sure it depends on the weather.
Have you been to Schynige Platte? They've got a great alpine garden with hundreds of varieties of flowers. (And the views are outstanding, one side towards the Eiger, one side looking straight down at the Interlaken lakes, and the other side -- well, I don't know what it looks at but it's huge!!
Check out their website and follow the links (click on Agenda, then Blooming Calendar for months when certain flowers are in bloom at their garden).
