Well, after all the comments and pros and cons, we are going to spend a night in Florence, taking in part of our sites in the afternoon of that arrival night, and the balance the next day. And, we are also going to make reservations (if we can get them) at Hosteria Giusti in Modena for lunch one day, in consideration of comments another forumite has made here and on another site too.
We will visit the museum in Montelcino as well. Looking forward to it.

Hi, CA,
that sounds like a good plan.
[well, i would say that wouldn't I?
]
Have you sorted out when you're going to see what yet? with any luck you can get to the accademia on the evening you arrive, and then I really recommend an early reservation at the uffizi teh next mornnig. then everything else should fall into place.
you might also think about going up to Fiesole after the accademia [buses from the square just round the corner] and watching the sunset over florence from the bar by the busstop.
happy plannnig,
regards, ann

Ann, I am glad you mentioned Fiesole as this is something I wanted to do but with our original plan, it was doubtful. Our hotel will be near the Uffizi, so, we will try to get there the day of our arrival, then work our way north to the Accademia, then from there to Fiesole. Thanks!

Hi, Capri,
much better plan.
you could plot a good route across town, ending up at the accademia, with the fiesole bus just round the corner.
if you have time, the roman theatre and other remains across the road from the bus-stop are worth a view, &/or the monastery at the top of the little lane to the left of the cathedral. [also worth a view, albeit not a long one].
you can do a round trip up the little lane to the monastery [restaurant half way up on the right, but don't know what it's like and a view over Florence plus a monument to local heros in a little park on the left], tour of monastery [don't miss the nativity scene at the back of the church or the free museum full of objets collected by the monks on thier misionary travels] and then back down to town through the gardens to the south of the monastery. a left turn onto the lane at the base of the gardens brings you out by the roman remains.
an hour or so is enough for all this [exlusing the roman remains] if you don't linger unduly.
I suspect you won't have enough time this trip, but a walk up to the little park may be possible.
happy travels,
