FLORENCE CELEBRATES BOTTICELLI AND LIPPI
An exhibition of works by Sandro Botticelli and his pupil Filippino Lippi opened at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence yesterday and will run until July 11th. The show, entitled ?Botticelli and Filippino: Anxiety and Grace in 15th Century Florentine Painting?, is composed of more than 60 works, some of which have never been seen. The exhibition offers a new reading of the two artists - the first well known and loved, the second all but forgotten - and their revolutionary style, as seen in Filippino?s ?Annunciation? with its expressive use of perspective, and his tormented ?San Girolamo, and Botticelli?s narrative canvasses, including the pathos of his ?Pietà?. The works in the show have been insured for €500 million.

I hate to think of Lippi's work as "all-but-forgotten," but Botticelli certainly did gain the fame between the two. Anyway, the art exhibit sounds really neat. There is also a great one going on in Perugia and other cities in Umbria of works by Perugino who might also fit into the category of lesser-known, despite his fine series of works during the Renaissance. But this was as a result of one of his pupils instead of his teacher--Raffaello (who, incidently, is from le marche, just another great reason to visit this region!!).

This is the URL for the English-language version of the site (since I'm not seeing anything to click on to get to it from the Italian version.)
