Hi klt-
I have only stayed in Hotel Globus. I know many people on this board recommend Casci.
I was at Globus Nov 03, it was nice. The hotel was renovated in 2002, so everything is new and "sleek-looking". It looks exactly like the photos on its website. We stayed 1 night in a superior double and 2 nights in the standard double. The standard is quite small, but if you don't plan on spending much time in your room it would be fine. The front desk staff (all shifts) was extremely nice and helpful. They also have free internet in the hotel lobby.
It is closer to the train station than Casci, which means it is a bit farther away from Duomo, but nonetheless, a 10min walk max.
One disadvantage of Globus is that the hotel lobby is not on the street level. From the street you have to climb a flight of stairs up to the lobby (no elevator). Once you get to the lobby, they have an elevator to take you up to the rooms on 3rd & 4th floor.
I would definitely go back to stay at Hotel Globus.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Globus for 4 nights last year. The staff is wonderful, friendly and very helpful. Everything was newly remodeled. However, our room was the size of a college dorm. And there was no separation of the shower from the rest of the bathroom. It was just a curtain with a drain in the floor.

We enjoyed the Hotel Casci. Its location was convenient to the Duomo, Uffiz and Academ. galleries, the St. Lorenzo outdoor market, and was a 10min walk (or short cab ride) to the rail station.
The family that runs this hotel are charming and helpful with any planning that you might require. If you are an opera buff, this is a house where Rossini lived for several years. The ample breakfast buffet was served in a room with lovely, original frescoes.
Our room was large with comfortable beds and a decent bathroom. A very nice hotel, great location.

Another happy guest of Hotel Casci! Location is excellent and the family running the hotel are extremely pleasant. Breakfast is a friendly atmosphere and we loved the free internet access in the lobby. I don't believe the Casci is probably as sleek-looking as the Globus (just a guess, can't say for sure having never stayed at Hotel Globus), but if it's a factor, the Casci does have an elevator going from the street to the lobby level (though quicker using stairs.)
