Fjords in Norway

Beginning in Oslo. How many days would you plan to see the scenic areas of Norway and the best Fjords and how would you do it? Would you rent a car? Are there any small boat tours available?

Thanks.

WTexan: Starting from Oslo, I would first take the Norway in a Nutshell excursion from Oslo to Bergen. You will have an early, rushed, exciting, beautiful day. Truly, an experience and a wonderful view of some of the fjords.
Bergen is a destination location in itself. Spend a couple of nights here to take in the sites. Then, rent a car and head out to the fjord country. There are a number of options. You can do round trip day trips or idealy, stay out on each fjord for the evening/early morning views. These are fantastic times to view the fjords as the shadows and even the colors are more vivid when not bleached out by the overhead, mid-day sun. Don't worry about boat tours as you almost invariably enter at one end of a fjord and take a ferry to reconnect with the road at the other end or somewhere along the way. The ferry trips are great.
Geiranger staying at the Union Hotel with a fantastic fjord-view room and Balestrand staying at Kvikne's Hotel (again, the views) are marvelous.
If you havee the time and the inclination, the Hurtigrten costal express boats offer an amazingly scenic trip up the coast all the way to the Polar town of Tromse if you like. You can really go as far as you have time for and return when and where you want. Again, an amazing experience.
When you have had your fill of the fjord country or run out of time, take the train from Bergen back to Oslo for one of the most beautiful train trips in the World.
You are going to a truly beautiful part of the World. Have a great trip.

Sorry about that. I have no idea how my playing with a smiley ended up with that URL here!
Please ignore.
