Fjords from Oslo, Norway - which is the best way?

I'll be in Oslo in a few days (mid-September) - 3 days only. Want to see fiords (a childhood dream!). Please suggest how to go about seeing fiords from Oslo - how and where to book a trip? I've been thinking about Norway-In-the-Nutshell - is this the best option? Should I buy a package or do it on my own (take a trai to Flam, take a boat in Flam, stay overnught, and come back to Oslo)?

Thanks in advance for the ideas!

Viktor.

Norway in a Nutshell is probably the best option. I am not aware that there is much of a price break if you book each leg individually. Flam is not that interesting. I would not stay there overnight.

Don't stay in Flam. Stay at the Stalheim, a Norway in a Nutshell stop, www.stalheim.com.

Norway in a Nutshell is sold as a package, but you are traveling independently, albeit with lots of other folks. Agree with Marija, break the trip at the Stahlheim - not a luxurious experience but comfortable and the view from the terrace is unbelievable. From Bergen, we hired a car for three days and drove to the area around the Hardanger fjord, and we did a day trip from there around the fjord. We're big on ferries, so that is part of the experience for us. Fodor's can show you the driving route(s)from Bergen.

I agree with the suggestion to stay in Stalheim. It's GORGEOUS. I felt as if I'd stepped into "The Sound of Music."

I hope you fare better than I did ... there was torrential rain as I went through the fjords. It was so cold and windy it was almost impossible to stay on deck.

Thanks for recommending Stalheim. Is there a inexpensive place to stay overnight? Guess it's not included in the NIN package.
