I'm sorry to have to disagree with the consensus, but I highly recommend staying in the Chianti region, you are a half hour from Siena, and a half hour from Florence. We stayed near Castellina in Chianti, and had the most relaxing holiday, not spending all of our time in the car. Most towns were withing 20-30 minutes away, so we had a great deal of time to just enjoy the countryside, and the beautiful villa we rented. Much better than in the Montepulciano area, which I loved, having stayed in Montefolinco. But, the drawback was that we had to drive such a long distance to everywhere we went. Too much car time.
