letsgeaux: >>I would stay at the Ritz in Knightsbridge<<

to be accurate - the Ritz is not in Knightsbridge. It is in St James'e and across the street from Mayfair.

You are correct. Knightsbridge is a few blocks away.

I looked at this problem in reverse, given that I don't have experience with London luxury hotels. After numerous trips, my favorite location was the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury. What expensive hotel is closest to the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury? So far as I can tell, it's the Charlotte Street Hotel, which has terrific ratings on TripAdvisor. It might be more a "boutique" than "luxury", but it looks great.

We had a lovely stay at the Sofitel St. James. Great location…near the park, Piccadilly, Trafalgar Square, etc., etc. Nice low key hotel in converted bank building.

I too like the Sofitel. Good conversation on London luxury hotels on Frequent Flyer website.

I support the above suggestions of Covent Garden.

I would try the new Beaumont in Mayfair. It looks fantastic, and the restaurant is by the same people who own the Wolseley and Delauney restaurants.

Haven't stayed there but I think the St Pancas Rennaisance looks fabulous.

The St Pancras Rennaisance does look fabulous, but I wouldn't stay in that area on a first trip to London.

Sofitel St James, as recommended by other posters, is in a great location and looks pretty good.
I don't stay in hotels in London, so can only comment on location and the public parts of the hotel.

I think the area round Old St isn't all that, but it doesn't stop people pimping Hoxton and Shoreditch at every available opportunity so why not Kings Cross? Tbh anyone staying there is only ever going to be leaving by tube anyway, so it could be a nuclear winter outside and it wouldn't greatly matter.

I would not recommend Hoxton or Shoreditch to first time London visitors with a 9-year old either.

One day I'll stay at a luxury hotel in London and when I do it will probably be at Claridges. Over the holidays when I had too much time on my hands I watched a documentary show- Inside Claridges of London. I like places like that where the same staff has been around for years and years. The housekeeping head was stringent to details and cleanliness of the rooms and I liked the character of the Swiss GM with his eye to detail and service.

Most of the suggestions above are for large "ordinary" luxury hotels - you could be anywhere.

If you want to know you are in London, Fra Diavolo's list is the one to go with.

Claridges
the Connaught
Browns

Based on price and amex amenities, I have narrowed it down to :
the Goring
The Langham
The Baglioni
The Milestone

I am told the Langham is perhaps the ideal area for us with our daughter and being first timers- that we might enjoy being in the Kensington area more.
Any thoughts on the finalists?

I'm confused. The Langham is NOT in Kensington. It is in Marylebone which is nowhere near Kensington. It is near the Wigmore Hall for concerts, not far from Regents Park and from Oxford street if you want (extremely crowded) shopping

The Goring is between Victoria and Buckingham Palace. Very near the Royal Mews (Kate Middleton stayed there w/ her family the night before the Royal Wedding)

The Baglioni is across from Kensington Palace/Gardens, which is lovely, but it really isn't very convenient for transport. Unless your up market budget means you plan on using mostly taxis.

The Milestone has much the same location/issues at the Baglioni.

For posh but also being in the center of things and convenient for getting around -- I'd probably go for the Goring.

We loved the Egerton House, near the V&A museum, another Red Carnation hotel. It is a smaller, boutique hotel with the friendliest staff! The rooms were beautifully decorated, and we enjoyed a cooked to order plus buffet breakfast in the dining room. We were offered a complimentary high team served in the lounge. It was just after New Years, and there was a nice fire. There's also a small bar next to the lounge

If you're looking for a more intimate experience, I think you might really like it.

Whatever you decide, have a wonderful time. I'd love to hear how your nine year old daughter enjoys London. We're thinking of taking our grandchildren in a few years.
