First time to crete

Looking to go to Crete in October. Thinking 2 weeks. Should I split weeks staying different parts of island or have a base and hire a car to see the island. We Like to walk and see different things. Any advice on an itinerary.
Thanks

Two weeks would let you see most (probably not all) of Crete's highlights -- but not from a single base. Crete is much too large for that.

Whether you would find a single base suitable for your trip depends on what you want to see and experience.

FWIW, I found the Rough Guide the most useful of the half dozen guidebooks I used when planning my time there.

You might find some useful information in my trip report. The section on Crete begins with post # 48

"We Like to walk and see different things*
?????????
Minoan Palaces and excavations?
medieval (Venetian) city centers and fortresses?
canyons and gorges with or without (often strenuous) hiking trails?
stunning sandy beaches?
date groves?
unspoilt villages?
or what?

jjst one base, you will spend most of your time on the road. You can base yourself in Chania on the right and Heraklion on the left over 1x week each
