first time Paris...hotel needed May

Will be in Paris for three nights in mid May. need recommendations for hotels centrally located to tourist areas and metro or other transportation links. Prefer smaller hotels but location is priority. Would like to keep to under $200 us per night. Never been to Paris and neighborhoods have me confused! Frantically studying info but I know I need to get hotel settled. Thanks for any help

Lots of people here will give you ideas of hotels, but to clarify/simplify the layout of Paris: Neighborhoods (to give you a handle) are called arrondissements, and are numbered starting along the river Seine and curling out like a snail. Number One is Louvre, the islands are No.4, the Latin Quarter is No. 5, for example. The Louvre is on the Right Bank of the Seine, the Latin Quarter is on the Left Bank ("Rive Gauche" means left bank)

We've stayed in lots of areas, and tend to like the Marais, Latin Quarter, and Louvre the most, but everyone has their own favorites. One of the things we like about staying on the Right Bank (Louvre, Marais, Islands) is that the Metro line One runs all along the Right Bank, which makes it very easy to get around. We stayed in the 7th once, near the Eiffel Tower and Invalides, and always had to transfer to get to, say, the Louvre, so personally I wouldn't stay there the first time. But others will say, oh it's so romantic. Whatever.

For your budget - which is 147 Euros, at present rates, you might look at the 3rd and 5th especially.

Is this budget for a room for one or more than one person?

We stayed once in this hotel in the 5th:

http://www.leportroyal.com/en/

It's right on the southern border of the fifth, so it's a bit further out. However, we walked from there to Notre Dame and back one day, passing through the Jardin des Plantes, which is not far from the hotel. The Luxembourg Gardens are also not far from the hotel.

We really loved the neighborhood; the hotel is on a nice boulevard, there were good bus connections to various train stations, and there were not a lot of tourists.

Our room was very small, and there was only one electrical outlet we could use, which was rather high on a wall, so the cords to our phones didn't reach unless we put a chair under the outlet. Most of the rooms use a shared bath in the corridor, but we got a room with our own bath. Good thing, too, because after eating in a rather pricey restaurant across the street, I spent the entire next day anchored to that bathroom. There's an Indian restaurant next to the hotel, which was very good, and on the other side of the boulevard there were two restaurants, whose names I don't remember. The more expensive is the one I would avoid. There are also some restaurants further down the street.

Hi D,

In Paris, we always stay at the Hotel Bonaparte, 61 Rue Bonaparte in the 6th. From 139E dbl + bkfst. It is just around the corner from Place St. Sulpice, near 3 metro stops and 4 bus routes. Has AC and an elevator.

The staff speaks English well, and is very helpful. The front desk is staffed 24/7

They can arrange a shuttle pickup to CDG for you.

Enjoy your visit.

I don't really understand what people mean when they say the areas of Paris are too confusing, just tell me where to stay. If you are planning a trip and have a guidebook (and ideally a map, like Streetwise or something), you can easily see where the center of the city is, and you should get an idea where you want to stay, in general.

The Port Royal is a decent 1* hotel in Paris, one the edge of the 5th and 13th arr. I like the location, but some people might want more than a 1* hotel, so you should know that. And I know many people will claim that's "too far out" because a lot of folks want to be within a couple blocks of the Seine or so, it seems to me. It isn't far at all, and is a good neighborhood, but if you like being around the tourists etc in St Germain and the Seine, you may not like it. You will have to take metro or bus to get most places you'll probably want to see -- rue Mouffetard market is within walking distance, though.

In any case, this is the real URL of the Port Royal. It is a good deal as you can get doubles for only around 100 euro. http://www.port-royal-hotel.fr/

The Bonaparte is a possibility, but you won't get a room there for 139 euro in mid-May, but can closer to 150 euro. You probably need a 2* hotel now, to be honest, to get something for 147 euro in mid-May. And they will be smaller ones, so no worry there. The good news in mid-May, you could consider hotels without AC, so much more choice in the 2* category. YOu can get a room at that rate here, very central location http://www.hotelclementparis.com/

Lots of advice on some prior threads about budget hotels in Paris, if you want to look for them. If not, give these a try or Hotel College de France, it is fairly cheap.

Hi Ducko,
I took Ira's advice about Hotel Bonaparte when we took our granddaughters to Paris -- one at a time -- so we have stayed there twice in a triple. We really did enjoy it, so thanks to Ira That said, I booked again this year, when it will be just my husband and myself, so we only booked a double. It was 175 Euros, so maybe a bit above your budget. We also enjoyed Hotel Clement and Hotel du College de France, which are both less than that for a double room. Hotel du College de France is in the 5th, but close to the 6th, with good transportation choices. Both have small rooms, but are well located and pleasant.

Have a great time in Paris!
