First time in England

My boyfriend and I are going to London for the first time on Thursday. We will be there for ten days and still haven't decided what to do or see. Does anyone have any suggestions for young adults in their mid- twenties? Should we stay in England the whole time or go to other countries?

My husband and I made our first trip to England last year. We spent two nights in London (not really enough!), then rented a car & drove north through Cotswolds, Stratford-on-Avon, all the way across Wales to ST. David's (a beautiful tiny village on the Atlantic), back across southern Wales to Southern England, Bath, Stonehenge and Salisbury -- in six days!! If I were you, I would spend three or four days in London, then try to get out in the countryside and visit some of the smaller towns (and YES, Stratford-on-Avon and Stonehenge are definitely worth seeing, as are Bath & Salisbury!!), then take the Chunnel and spend two or three days in Paris. Or maybe make a run up to Scotland by train? Whatever you do, it will be wonderful -- have a great time!

I don't wish to be rude, but ....

Why are you coming to London ? Have you done any research at all into what London has to offer? Or is this a free air miles trip or whatever?

Deborah I would do 5 days in London and 5 days in Paris. There is so much to see and do in both cities.I would go to the bookshop and buy a good guidebook.Despite what Tony says London is a great city.He just wants you to go to Edinbrough.

Tony,
You make it sound like I'm silly for going to London. My boyfriend bought me the trip for Christmas. One of my close girl friends from work moved back home to England in December so we are going to see her.Unfortunately she will be in Scotland for part of our visit.

Hint to practical joker or Deborah: I always use my last name ...thus the posting above was not from me ...

Catherine, I think London is ok, nothing more nothing less. Both Edinburgh (note sp.) and London have their own unique charm.

My buddy & I just got back from London last week. We were there for 8 days & loved every minute of it. However, we went unprepared, & found ourselves wanting to escape London & head for the country. In London, see all the sights, Westminster Abby, Buckingham Palace, Tower of London,etc...but stay away from the "London Dongeons"...boring! The pubs are wonderful & I think I had the best time hanging out in the pubs & meeting people. The people are friendly in London. If you leave the city, go to bath for a night or two...A most romantic city, (i really wish I had my girlfriend with me when I went there)
I also saw deals to Paris for three days for only 99 pounds. Not bad. Someone once told me, "when a man grows tired of living in London, a man has grown tired of living." I think he was right.
