Fiesole of Florence city center?
My sister and I will be in Italy in early November. We will be staying at the Accademia in Venice (2 nights) and will be using points to stay at a Sheraton in Rome (4 nights). The Sheraton is not in a great location, so we will miss the experience of staying in the city center. Because of that, do you recommend staying in the city in Florence (3 nights)? We are torn between that and staying in Fiesole. Since we have no small towns planned for this trip, we thought staying in Fiesole may give us a small taste of that. Can't decide. Your thoughts are appreciated.

While Fiesole is a charming town on top of the hill, I think you will be spend most, if not, all your time traveling back and forth to the attractions in Florence. The views are lovely from Fiesole, but there are other areas with breath-taking views too (climb to the top of the Duomo). I would opt to stay in Florence and make a visit to Fiesole.

I do agree that Fiesole would give you a more "out in the country" feel. The bus into Florence or back is 1 euro and takes about 1/2 hour. You can also take a cab for about 8 euro in 20 minutes.
Therefore, you can see what therealbobbie was referring to in travel time. However, if you only travel to Florence and back once per day (morning into Florence, evening out), then I think you would still be able to see a great deal in the city during the time you are there.
I also agree that the views over Florence from Fiesole are wonderful!
Have fun!

Thank you Statia and therealbobbie. I have seen several posts from people who prefer to stay in Fiesole on return trips. Hopefully some of them can weigh in as well.
And DRJ, I'd hardly compare Fiesole to Newark. Besides, I am not looking at Fiesole as somewhere stay at night. Staying at a beautiful villa with a fabulous view would be a part of the overall experience. Some of my best travel experiences in the US and abroad are in smaller cities and villages.

If you mean staying at Villa San Michele, that will probably NOT scratch the "small town" itch for you. It is hardly "IN" Fiesole, and not such a great walk from there to the town "square" proper (and there's not much to that).
VSM is indeed a lovely place, but I would probably recommend stay IN Florence.
Best wishes,
Rex
