ferry vs. flight
Hi Fodorites,
My itinerary is (almost) all set for our trip to Greece next month.
However Aegean Airlines just notified me of a change in our flight from Chania to Athens thus affecting our flight from Athens to Santorini. With the new change, we'd have a 3 to 4 hour layover depending on which flight we now take.
I'm wondering if we should take the ferry from Crete to Santorini instead.
We're staying in Chania while in Crete. How long would the ride be from there to where we'd pick up the ferry? Would we be able to take a bus?
Thanks for your help.

There's a 5:30 AM bus from Chania that will get you to Heraklion in plenty of time for the 9:45 AM ferry to Santorini. The bus takes approximately 2.5 hours with a change/stop in Rethymnon.
The Heraklion>Santorini ferry, the Hellenic Seaways FlyingCat #4, has 2 no-sail dates in April, the 27th and 30th.

Bettina, if the website shows FlyingCat 4 starting its season on Apr 18th (and it does), then it won't be running on the 15th.
Under the circumstances, a 3-4 hour layover in Athens isn't unreasonable. I have waited longer than that for a connecting flight to the islands many times. Things to do while you are waiting for the flight to Santorini: check out the shops in the departure area; have a look in the little museum one level up from departures; wander over to Sofitel for coffee, drinks, or a meal.
