Ferry Genova-Barcelona
Anyone with experience using this ferry w/ car in mid-season (May)?
Is it a smooth procedure to get oneself and car aboard, or lots of hassle? Have not found any information on the ferry company's website how long before departure one has to be at the port, so any information or any general opinion is very welcome.
Thanks in advance.

The Viamare website that with a vehicle, you need to be at the dockside 2 hours before departure.
And maybe this will help a bit. I poached it from RV'ers message board. The person writing appears to have done it between July and October 2008"
" we bit the bullet and we booked the crossing with a motorhome, towing a car on an A Frame and a dog. The booking was for the day after Italy's Bank Holiday so we were expecting it to be very busy. We were pleasantly surprised to find the Ferry was practically empty. We had booked with the option of "camping On Board" giving us the cheaper rate of 260 Euros all in (apparantly the full price with accomodation would have been over 400 Euros.) We were put on a half open car deck with just a few others. We were allowed to use all facilities of which were very good. The dog was allowed to stay in the Motorhome and as it was so empty we could excercise him on the car deck as well. Not sure if this would have been tolerated if it had been so busy. There were kennels on the top deck but these were not in the shade so didn't make use of these. The 18 hour crossing was smooth and we all enjoyed the experience and would do it again."
and this might reassure you

I live not far from Genova and am keen to take this ferry sometime (also Palermo and other destinations). If you take the ferry, I hope you'll return to report.

I like to use direct links when possible so here's the link for Grandi Navi.
http://www3.gnv.it/en/gnv-home/gnv-h...home-page.html
Check-in times.
Passengers with vehicle, at least 2 hours before departure (3 for the Genoa/Tangiers/Genoa line and for on-board camping).
Foot passengers (without vehicle), at least one hour before departure.
For security reasons, access to the boarding quays is permitted only to passengers in possession of a ticket or boarding pass.

We loooove the ferries in Europe and they have been an important addition to our open ended world tour ( as a family since 2006).
We in Barcelona now & will be trying this one to Genoa this week, but we have taken the Grimaldi ferry between Barcelona and Rome many times and love it! We take our RV with us and sometimes camp in it as we go or sometimes we get a cabin.
I wrote about our first experience here:
http://www.soultravelers3.com/2007/0...lona-rome.html
Getting on the very first time was a little intimidating, but now that we have done it many time in many countries and even take a few cargo ships, we find it one of our favorite ways to travel.
There is also a great ferry from Venice to Athens, one from Italy to Croatia, a great cargo ship from UK to Sweden, one from France to Ireland ( all we have taken & written about) and many many more.
Usually you can do them as cheap or as expensive as you like depending on your comfort level and if you are bringing a car/RV/bike/motorcycle etc.
Wonderful way to do slow travel!
