Thanks hoxa61 and Palenque,
I appreciate the time you've taken in helping me sort out the rail logistics. However, we've changed our plans and destination. I've posted a new topic, mainly asking questions about Lubeck, Germany.
For some reason this trip wasn't falling together well, and it finally dawned on us that we'd really like to visit someplace else. We still have the conference in Copenhagen, but instead of extending the trip to the north into Scandinavia, we're ending in Copenhagen and starting in northern Europe--Belgium then Germany. The farthest north will be Copenhagen, Denmark.
Thank you all for continuing to respond to our Scandinavian questions.

If traveling enough by train in Germany and Benelux then look at the Germany-Benelux Railpass and pay the small amount to get out of Denmark to the German border. Same thing as Sweden - book online far enough in advance in non-changeable tickets then that may be the best but for flexibility of just showing up and hopping on any of the zillions of daily trains in these countries then the pass can be a boon -especially in first class compared to regular first-class fares - and for someone on a holiday i automatically recommend first-class - in 40 years of traveling on trains in Germany and Benelux i have never not found empty seats in first class - usually a seat next to me to put my bags on etc - and usually a solo seat with aisle and window - you can often get two facing each other with a table in between.

Palenque, I will look into rail passes. We'll have a couple of days with long trips (at least I think they'll be long) so it may pay to have a pass instead of point to point fares. I think the trip from Maastricht to Lubeck will be long, as well as Lubeck to Copenhagen. Thanks for the reminder.

Maastricht is practically in Germany - Aachen is a short train ride away - you may look at the Germany-Denmark railpass or a Eurail Select pass good in Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland if those countries are still in play. the nice thing in Germany and Denmark is you can just hop on any train anytime - in Sweden you must reserve the fast trains but only with a few euro fee - but still limits sponteneity.
