Barb, I did some research on transportation from Croatia to Italy for my trip this Summer. My itinerary changed, so I didn't make final plans. If you can locate a copy of the October 2000 "Travelocity" magazine, there is a lengthy article on Dubrovnik and Ancona, including information on the ferry trip.

I just did a search on Ancona here and came up with no posts that answer the quality of the rooms/seats and whether or not it was a pleasant journey.

I'm not sure of your itinerary prior to going to Croatia, but www.europebyair.com offers $99 (plus airport taxes) one-way airfare from Rome to Dubrovnik and to Split. There probably are other carriers that more knowledgeable posters could suggest for you.

Good luck & have a wonderful trip.

Hello, Barb and Heather,
We are thinking about the ferry also and wonder if you knew how long it takes between these two cities. My husband has gotten seasick at times and I am concerned about this.
Do you have any websites you have liked?
Thanks,
Gloria

We took the Jadrolinija ferry from Ancona to Split. It left in the evening and arrived about 6AM. We booked an inside room and it had a bunk bed and a sink. Nothing fancy and it was a little on the hot side beause we could not figure out how to work the air. I probably would fly if you could. Not sure if the Italian ferry is nicer but if you take Jadrolinija I would book an outside room.

We also took the ferry from Hvar to Dubrovnik. Since it was an all day trip we did not need a room. The restaurant was fine on both. Travel by hydrofoil whenever possible, though, its faster!
