Fernie Castle
We are planning a trip to England/Scotland in October. We would like to spend at least one night in an castle around Edinburgh, Inverness, Perth or St. Andrew. I found Fernie Castle on the web and it looks really neat. Has anyone stayed there or stayed at other castles in this area? Any help would be appreciated.

Also, I posted a message a few weeks ago about traveling in England in October and now I can't find it even when I search for October. Can anyone explain why it disappeared or how to find it? I don't want to lose this question too. Thanx! I've learned a lot from the threads about England and Scotland. This is a great website.

bob--

i just stayed there 2 nites ago. do not recommend it. as a hotel it's alright, altho in the mid-range, meaning not too rundown, not too luxurious, and some of its staff is extremely friendly and bright. the reasons i don't recommend it are that there isn't much to distinguish this place from any other hotel. there's a page in the room literature giving its history from the 14th century and another page on the resident ghost, but apart from that u don't get any access to non-hotel rooms, and the staff car park is right under guest windows, and there's something of a dumpyard next to it. the other reason is they are not equipped for elderly or frail visitors, for eg no handrails on stairways, so that my mother pitched headfirst down the carpeted stairs and landed on her back on the landing w/ head and neck pain. we had to go to emergency to ascertain that she wd be alright, given that it was a head injury.

for the money, i wd choose another castle, prolly traquair house south of edinburgh, bc of its history and its impressive architecture.

Thanks for the help. Mari, we've eliminated Fernie Castle, are now considering Castle Stuart,Traquair, Borthwick & perhaps Culcreuch. Borthwick and Stuart both have impressive connections with Scottish history. Traquair and Culcreuch are located in good locations for our trip. Thanks for everyone's help. I'll post our final decision when we make it.

while we are on the subject of castles i am-- traveling 1 adult /4 kids for month of august in ireland, wales, & circa london -- looking for castle lodgings -- any recommendations other than ruthin and brecon-- also one of my ancestors was the lord of the dolorous castle (not sure of spelling)of arthurian legend -- read something not long ago that said it still existed and was in good condiotion but cannot find it now-- i would speculate it should be near glastonbury or tintagel (cornwall)

We spent one night at Borthwick castle this past May while we were touring Scotland. The reason I chose it was mainly for the history. I'd just finished reading a biography of Mary, Queen of Scots and so staying in the same castle where she had escaped by climbing out the window dressed as a boy and eating dinner in the great hall where she ate was exciting to me. I enjoyed our stay. The surrounding area was very pretty. Dinner was just okay but the atmosphere made it worth it. In addition, it was more moderately priced than some others. Oh, and as an added bonus they have ghosts too.
