FCO to Siena - HELP!!

I'm back again, needing more help and information. The last trip I planned to Italy everything seemed so straight forward, but with this trip there are many more details! Of course, I probably have forgotten all the planning that I did back then.

We need to get from FCO to Siena. We are scheduled to arrive at FCO around 12:45 and need to decide which option we should take. We would prefer not renting a car at FCO as we will be in Siena at least 4 days until we will have time to wander through Tuscany. Renting a car in Siena would make more sense. So... do we take the bus (SENA) from Rome to Siena or take the train to Florence and pick up the SITA bus there to Siena. They both seem to take the same amount of time. Going through Florence would be an extra change, but the train may be more comfortable than the bus. If we take the SENA bus do we need reservations in advance? How much time do we need to leave after arriving at the airport?

I would appreciate any feedback regarding either option.

One more question. If we decide to take the SENA bus, how do we get from FCO to the bus station? Is there a train from the airport that goes directly there? Do you catch it the same place as the train to the Terminii?

BarbaraJ,
See http://www.sena.it/
and
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
to determine what works better for you. You can take the train to Siena with a change in Chiusi (no need to go to Florence). Or you can take the train at FCO to Staz. Tiburtina to get the bus across the street. The train on the left at FCO (not the express) goes to Tiburtina.

Time is about the same but the bus is cheaper. Schedule may be the factor for you. I have always been on the street at FCO 45 minutes after I landed maybe figure an hour.

Take the SENA bus it is the cheapest option (if you book online, it can work out less than €10 each way). It also has the advantage of dropping you at Piazza Gramsci in Siena, and not at Siena station which is a mile from town, all uphill.

To get from FCO to the bus, get the train from the airport to Rome Tiburtina - trains about every 15 - 20 minutes. The journey takes 45 minutes.

The bus station is opposite the Tiburtina, about a 5 minute walk maximum. On weekdays, there is a buse at 15:30.

I think that the 14:00 is too tight as you would need to be on the 12:57 train. The 15:30 should give you plenty of time providing your flight is on time.

The coach is quite comfortable - I have made this trip a couple of times.

Thanks for the responses!

Henry - I thought about changing in Chuisi, but thought it would be just as easy to go to Florence and take the bus as the bus lets you off in the center of Siena and it looked to be a better schedule that the train connection.

I'll look over the sites and see what fits our schedule best.

Thanks again!
