Thanks, hanl, we will definitely have to try chouchen while we're in Brittany! I wonder if a jar of honey from Brittany would be something special to bring back, as well? Or does the honey used in chouchen come from other locations?

hi brioche,
the others have jsut about covered all the bases, but those sardines used to be made in Cornwall too, then exported in huge numbers to Italy, especially Liguria, for use in pasta sauces.
but those canny ! Bretons kept their own for eating themselves, i think.
on our trip to Brittany last year we bought some lovely faience, but on getting it home, i realised that the plates [a boy and girl, facing each other] don't quite match. so if you are buying such things, check REALLY carefully that you are getting a matching pair/set.
have a great trip,
regards, ann

Annhig, I have about a gazillion of those Quimper plates, collected by my grandmother. I designed our kitchen around them. No two are exactly alike because they are all painted by hand. Are the differences in the figures or in the backgrounds? There are several different border patterns.

hi nikki - lucky you!
what really narked me was that they were sold to me as a matching pair - a boy and a girl facing each other - with the same border, etc. but when i got then home, I realised that they are by two different manufacturers so that there are subtle differences in colour, etc. the girl being duller and slightly less well-drawn than the boy.
serves me right for buying them after a rather boozy lunch!!!
have a great time, brioche,

Our favorite and much used souvenir was a little pottery dish for the sea salt in Brittany blue.
And the herb mixes with algae in little glass jars were nice little gifts, and made excellent soup stock.
When we got home and found how useful they both were, wish we had bought more of each. Found them both in local markets.

Thanks, tmagyari! Dishes are one of my weaknesses, so I feel certain I will bring back some kind of pottery - a dish for sea salt would be perfect & something I'd use every day. I also want to bring back a supply of sea salt, and some of that "algae" stuff to try, (it sounds so interesting!).

oh yes, I've just remembered the other souvenir we brought home - a special pot for cooking mussels, like the ones they use in restaurants in Brittany.
it's really great and I'm soos looking forward to using it, as we quite often eat mussels..except that in the 6 months since we bought it, I've never cooked them! I'll have to have a go this weekend.
