Italy is my favorite. The food, wine, art, people, landscape, vineyards, history, and out of this world scenery. <BR>My life is so much richer from traveling there 2 times and I plan to go back many more. There is a little poem that says, "You can have the universe if I may have Italy"<BR>There is nothing to compare. You will find all your hearts desires there.<BR> Janda

Austria...for the charming Alpine villages, the baroque churches, Viennese cafes, opera/classical music, cakes and pastries, christkindlmarkts, monasteries, efficient public transport, palaces, castles and fortresses, diverse topography, all packed into an area the size of Maine!

In summer - Scotland - the scenery, the LONG days in late spring early summer
In spring - England (the gardens and cathedrals), Wales (the castles), France (the cathedrals and food), Greece (orange blossoms and ancient ruins), Italy (the art galleries)
In fall - England (the museums and great houses), Scotland (the heather), Germany (the ancient towns)
In winter - sorry - the caribbean wins out.

Admittedly, I've only visited eight European countries so far, but I would throw in a vote for Norway. Oslo and Bergen are very cool cities (and somewhat different from each other), and the fjords are gorgeous. One week is just about enough time to visit both major cities and take a trip through the fjords as well. The weather is great for a summer visit if you want to be "comfortable" every day and not too warm (great walking-around weather). We also loved having some daylight at midnight.

I have seen almost every country in Western Europe, including Andorra and Lichtenstein, (not Greece, though), and my favorites are, by far, #1 Italy and #2 Turkey (I know, not in Western Europe, but Europe nonetheless). If I was to live in Europe again, it would definitely be Italy. I do love Spain and Portugal, too. It all depends on what you like. You won't catch me more than 200 miles from the Med (with the exception of Paris). Seen all the North and I'm done with it. We're off to the Dordogne this summer. Onon.
