Just got back this week from Rome, Venice and Florence and contrary to what you might read on this forum, I saw jeans everywhere on men and women. The ones with the faded/yellowed look on the front and back appeared pretty popular for women. Most wore them skin tight, though, and with high heels - not exactly the best traveling outfit. Most teenagers dressed the same as they do here.

Those "bowling shoes" that everyone mentions are all over the place - most shoe stores have them featured prominently in their displays.

For women, jeans and demin skirts with faded patches. Some girls are wearing shoes with long points, you could get the last piece of meat from a lobster using them.

I saw those shoes too! I also noticed a lot of Burberry being worn, even by children.

Sorry, girls, but those bowling shoes are over. Like 16 months ago.

What's in:

peasant blouses, halter tops in silk gorgette, Dolce & Gabbana's turquoise and leather sandals, Burberry trenches, white Pumas, Louis Vuitton wedgies, yoga clothing, purses with fringe, YSL's leather and metal bag, and the shoe of the summer--Cesare Paciotti's leather sandal with 4-inch wooden heel.

Look fabu on your Vespa, sweetie.

I'm not too fashion-minded, but this is what I noticed in central Italy (Umbria) in March (i.e. not summer): On YOUNG women, jeans that were dark blue, but with a big extremely faded streak down the middle of the front of the thighs. The dressiere pants on the young were tight, I think often black, and definitely seemed to be of a synthetic material. I also noticed that the pants seemed constructed to emphasized, rather than cover over, the separation of the "cheeks." Bowling shoes and jeans on the young and the casually dressed. Sturdy, practical shoes that were a cross between walking shoes and pumps, with a sturdy chunky low-medium heel on middle aged women. No spike heels or extremely delicate heels. All sorts of colors on women, in addition to lots of black and navy, but especially a lot of camel, tan and beige. Camel seemed to be the "in" color. Many of these women had coloring like mine, and tan was not a good color on tawny-skinned brunettes. (However, the same color, in expensive looking fabrics with interesting textures, looked very nice on older wealthy-looking Milanese women with their probably gray hair colored honey blonde, who were strolling around Bergamo on a Sunday afternoon. But that's not central Italy.). Moderately snug to skin tight pants on young men and young women. On middle ages women, pants and sweaters, dresses, skirts and blouses and coats. Sneakers/big athletic shoes only on the young. But olde people did wear those bowling shoes and slip-ons with sturdy oddly shaped soles. Middle aged and older men never too sloppy even when just hanging around casually.
