Thanks for the Savennieres reminder: in the best vintages and with lots of age, they may rival the best of Alsace - especially in bang for the "buck".
Alas, here in MX: Chile, Argentina, and some low end Spanish, MX and Italian are about all we see at retail for anything reasonably priced.

Forget about famous brands. Find a shop where you can sample wines, and select what you like. Many lower priced producers are just as good a high priced ones.
Many years ago when I lived in Paris, a basic table wine cost less than bottled water, and was better than several wines 3 times its price.
If you do any wine tours, they will let you sample.
