Famous French Chef commits suicide

This chef was a 3 star Michelin and a 19 (out of 20) points on some other listing. He lost 2 points on his 19 listing. They believe this plus other worries led him to commit suicide.

You can view the article at latimes.com. You may have to "register", but it is no big deal. An inside glimpse of the fast world of high end cusine.

Curious

I may never look at one of those "Death by Chocolate" desserts the same way again!

Isn't there a book series about a French chef who solves mysteries? I think one of them is titled Death By Chocolate. I read one on a plane once and it was cleverly written, anyone know?

Death by Chocolate sounds good to me.
There must be worse than that.

How tragic, especially since he had young children. Could anyone tell us of their dining experiences in any of his 4 restaurants?
La Cote d'Or in Saulieu
Tante Louise, Tante Jeanne and Tante Marguerite - all in Paris

There is a fairly recent book about Bernard Loiseau, and his Cote d'Or restaurant and the battle to keep his 3-star rating. I think it was called "Burgundy Stars".

There is a well-written article on the subject in the Guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/elsewhere/...903516,00.html

Indeed how sad it is that we have imbeciles contributing pathetic jokes to this thread. It was a tragedy and to my french friends my sympathy as I know how much loved this person was and a great personality in France.

Kathy, if you should refer to my remark, please accept my apologies.
The title of that book which I haven't heard of so far, just sounded good to me and I was mainly referring to Patrick's comment.

I have been reading all the articles in Le Figaro and watched the 8 PM news on a French TV channel on Tuesday. I found it very surprising to see his most controlled wife in an interview, saying that business will go on as usual, except for the day of the funeral which happens to be tomorrow afternoon.

And after all, it was HIS decision to leave this world.
He wasn't killed!
What do we know about his real motives? Nothing!

It may be a tragedy, indeed, but there are a lot more others going on in this world and nobody knows about it.
I'm surprised that it should be surprising that his wife is controlled. I assume that in France as in Britain people try to maintain their dignity and self control in these circumstances.

Silvia,
I was mainly surprised, she DID give an interview only hours after the tragedy.
I was not surprised, she was controlling herself.

Sorry, if I don't express myself well sometimes.
English language = difficult language. Especially, all these subtleties.

Ursula, what really annoys me on this sort of occasion is the insensitivity of the press.
This poor woman probably agreed to an interview to get the vultures off her doorstep.

Well, I apologize to anyone who read my insensitive remark and was offended. It is a shame that someone would take his life for such a thing as that, and leave his family.

What a very sad story. And I know what you mean about the press, Sylvia.

(Just a note -- having worked in a hospice for years, I know that it's a natural human tendency to make light jokes around these moments. I'm sure that Patrick and the others did not intend any disrespect.)

An interresting bit of side info, this had happened once before: Reported on fox news last night- there was also a famous case in the 1600's in which chef Francois Vatel comitted suicide over a meal that was prepared for King Louis XIV.
FYI*
In the New York Times Sunday Op Ed pages, Brian Miller the food critic, tells a very interesting story about Bernard Loiseau. Makes more sense than the idea that someone would kill themselves over losing a star.

OK, I guess you didn't read it.
Seems that although Gault Mileau took away a star, he still had 3 Michelin Stars and that was not why he killed himself.
He was suffering from depression. It was a typical media mis-information article that started the whole thing.
Yes, his wife and children must be heartbroken, but even more so when stupid people attribute the wrong reasons to his suicide.
