family stay Venice area

Hello, late August our family of 5 will be travelling by car to Northern Italy. We will visit Venice then Verona and head to Austria. To cut down on moving hotels we are thinking of staying outside of Venice in the same hotel for 3 nights then head to Verona for 1 night. Do you have suggestions for hotels that would be reasonable for a family of 5?

Hi with,

I don't quite understand the question.

Why is staying outside Venice any different from staying in Venice?

Have you thought about staying in an apartament IN Venice?

Or, are you wanting to stay in a hotel that's halfway between Venice and Verona?

I'm not sure I understand either.

Stay in Venice. It is not a long drive to Verona.

We drove from Venice, spent the day in Verona, and ended up in Bolzano for the night (and then on to Innsbruck). It was an easy drive (even with kids) and we could have gone further.

There are hotels with big-enough rooms (some are converted apartments) on Venice island, and you won't regret it.

thanks for your replies. Someone suggested that to save on cost while visiting Venice we should stay in the outskirts..Mestre? Does this make sense?

I don't agree. You have to take the shuttle to get from Mestre to Venice, which drops you off at Piazzale Roma. Then you either have to walk a fair distance or take a vaporetto to get to any attractions. You won't be able to look out your hotel window and see Venice, but instead an industrial, depressing-looking suburb.

Venice is not a place to day trip TO, it is a wonderful experience in its own right, and you can daytrip FROM there to Verona if you like.

Please say what you want to spend on accomodations for all of you each night.

Hi withteens (and won't the teens love Venice!). Everyone here is correct IMO.

Staying is Mestre is the worst suggestion you could have received. Stay in Venice. The very best times in Venice is early morning (I know, the teens will sleep in but you and your DH can sneak out and watch Venice wake up) and in the evening again after all the daytrippers leave. If I had to stay in Mestre I would skip even seeing Venice this trip.

I am sure you can get a lot of good help here, good informative help. Best wishes.

Hi
I haven't stayed at the following, but they get good reviews here and at tripadvisor.com
verify the a/c and quad rooms

Hotel Do Pozzi
Albergo Paganelli
(Locanda) Al Piave
Locanda Sturion (no elevator, but has a/c I believe)
