I have not read every word above, so I apologize for any duplication. And whether the OP has already moved or simply disowned Fodor's, I offer the following.
I would try living in your romanticized world for a few months and see if at least meets your emotional and financial expectations.
It is like those who want to open a B & B, I tell them invite the relatives you most despise to stay at your home for a week. Wait on them hand and foot, cater to their every whim and serve them cut hot little muffins. And if at the end of that week, you are still cheery and long for more, open up a B & B.

just came across this thread looking for some advise as well. I am in a similar situation as Tom. It's interesting to me that members of a site like this would be so negative and critical. I think this was just part of Tom's research as he was in the beginning stages of the idea.
I know this is a year later now, so Tom I hope you were able to sort through the great advice here and follow through.

Does anyone here remember the American couple with a talented littl girl whom they called "Mozart" for her concert violin playing. They were doing the travel in an RV and wrote numerous reports and sent pics as they plowed ahead. Haven't seen them on Fodors for a few years and I don't recall the user name. It would be good to refer Tom the Tank to their posts. Anyone?
