Okay... some details.
Family of 5 (kids 10, 10 & 12)
We will train from Paris to Avignon (is TGV or "slow train" better for us? Can see country side better on slow train?)

Anyway - We're on our way to Barcelona with a three night side trip to Provence. I think we need to spend our third night in Montpellier in order to get the (only?) train to Barcelona on Sunday (early AM)... so, would like to stay in Avignon, or maybe St Remy, or? the first two nights.

We need space (5 of us) - but much prefer historic building over modern. Location more important than amenities. Will probably rent a car on arrival in Avignon - willing drive up to an hour or so for "right" hotel.

Prefer to spend less than 150 euros - less is better.

Most rentals are for one week; so I think you might have a problem if that's what you want. Also, 150€ for 5 people may be difficulthow many rooms will you need?

I am assuming you will have a rental car in Provence, right? The St Remy area is a good base with much to do in the general area. We stayed at a lovely B&B near there, but she only has 3 double rooms and I am not sure that would work well for children. cocofromdijon is right in steering you to gitesdefrance.

Underhill: The number of rooms we need depends on the room... We'd need two rooms (adjoining/connecting) for a normal hotel sized room. In Paris, Barcelona and Sevilla we have hotel/apartment/suite kinds or rooms booked.

I'm envisioning an inn in an historic building with a 2 br suite.

Anybody familiar with Avignon Grand Hotel or Hotel Cloitre St. Louis or Auberfe Sant Roumierenco (sp?) in St. Remy?
