Yes, Mimi, I was delighted to meet you at the Boston GTG. I also inherited good skin, but I'll try the red wine to improve it - sounds good to me!

Annabelle2, I am in the US and I found it in a small shop in Sausalito while on vacation. I do not remember the name of the store and have not found the product in my area (MA) yet. They have a website so I plan to order online.

I really never knew that all these creams made much difference. Ever since I was a teenager, I've had the notion that creams might clog my pores and cause pimples, so I generally avoid them on my face, though I do use them on hands and body during certain seasons. So I'm really missing a lot? Missing sleep for too many nights, not drinking enough water, eating cured meats or more cheese than usual or not as many vegetables as usual, or spending a lot of time outdoors in very cold weather make my skin look bad, while sleeping well, drinking a lot (water, water) and eating more fish than usual seem to make it look good.

An observation at college reunions: Over the decades, we all changed physically. Some of us got fat, some got wrinkled. A few, unfortunately, got both, but no one remained both slim and unwrinkled.

For whatever it's worth, I vaguely remember that my grandmother (born in the 1890s in southern Italy) used to say that the way to take care of hair when she was young was to rub it with olive oil before washing it and to wash it rarely.

Here's another thread on the same topic, which started out as an announcement about the NYC Lush store: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34477560

I also once worked in the consmetics industry and got a little cynical about the efficacy of products. Chemically, as has been mentioned, they are all pretty similar.

Then I returned to school at the age of 45 and had to examine my budget with sharp pencil. I looked at the price I was paying for Clarins Eye Contour Balm (French) and decided to give it a test. I used it on one eye only for 2 months and dabbed some vaseline petroleum jelly (which my gorgeous 80 year old Mother swears by)on the other.

At the end of the testperiod, I asked my husband, (critical)15 year-old daughter, Mom and best gal pal which eye was looking better (less lined). All guessed the Clarins eye and without any hesitancy.

So, I brown bag lunch once a week in my new career and spring for my treat of Clarins product- I am 52 now and have girlfriends who think I have had work done (if you know what I mean).

With reference to the question: I live here in Italy and I get better prices on Clarins back in Canada than in Rome (though the duty free price is very good) so my daughter, who is now far less critical, brings it to me when she visits her wrinkle-free mom. And, yes, I know that heredity is the largest factor but its a small personal pleasure to have some nice "girly" things, isn't it?

Interesting to hear the thoughts on Nivea - it's the only moisturiser I use and have done for years.

I don't wear makeup (shock horror) and have never got into the various brands -I have one friend who swears by Clinique and another by Lancome and so on and so on.

I have tried samples but I never see the results being better than good old Nivea.

And hey, if it's good enough for Joan Collins, it's good enough for me!!

PS In response to TravelReporter...

There are some of us who are still happy to proclaim their enthusiasm for LUSH products. Not all smell like fruit or "candy" by any means.

But I think that many people liked LUSH not because they liked the products but because they liked the cache of using a product not widelely available.

Over recent years LUSH has become much more successful and has stores opening frequently around the world. It's obviously far too mass market and "common" to remain on some peoples' hot lists!

And then there are simply those who just don't like the stuff and never have - and fair enough!

As I said elsewhere, wouldn't the world be boring if we all liked the same things?

Here's the Cali website: http://www.calicosmetics.com/

They may be able to tell you where you can purchase the products in Italy. I would think you could find them in Rome. They actually returned an email I sent and told me that the Green Cross Pharmacy in Boston carries some of their products. Just about everything is available online on their website though.

Have a great trip!

I am surprised. GBS beauty carries them. I wonder if the local GBS stores carries it as well as online. I will have to check today.

A wonderful skin cream from France is Molinard's Creme 24-- lemon and sweet almond oil. It's wonderful for hands, feet, knees& elbows. It smells soooo good.

Regarding Cali: Can anyone tell me if it would be found in a drug or department store in Sicily? I could not find that info on their website. My mom is leaving for Sicily this week and I shall be requesting some!

I too love shopping for new beauty products when I travel. I am fortunate that my "metrosexual" husband doesn't mind tagging along. I just can't complain when he makes me hang out with him at Circuit Magny-Cours for hours on end.

robbiegirl,
Sorry, I forgot that the original post was about Italy!!
I don't know whether you can buy it there or not-- but if you see it, get it!

I have ordered it online from here in the States, but it was very hard to find.
Here's one place you can order it:

Re: Lush

My sister gave me some of their solid shampoo ("hard&quot and I found it to be a great travel shampoo. It leaves my hair soft and makes a better body soap than most shampoos. Good thing to pack if you're traveling light.

Santa Maria Novella--limited availability in the States and a lovely
line.

If you want more suggestions, post and/or visit the Beauty BUzz or Make-up Alley. They know all.

Koshka: You tell 'em, gal! Yes, you have beautiful skin!

My Mother had beautiful, no wrinkles skin well into her 80s. She washed with mild soap, used Pond's for years, then switched to Estee Lauder for years. Just a dab, not gobs. No sun. Simple is best.

Hair: in Polynesia in the past, women did not wash their hair with water but would brush with lots of coconut oil. Luscious hair!

I bought some wonderful soaps and creams at Molinard's in Nice last year. I am going to Paris in Sept and I am wondering if I could buy some more Molinard's products there. Are they all over France, or just in the south?
