Check out the Hotel Chevre d'or which is right across from the Chateau d'Eza.
While on one trip, we stayed in Monaco, and friends were staying in Eze; we managed to get to see the rooms at the Chateau Eza and happened to like the Chevre d'or more. Just check it out to compare.
The restaurant at the Chevre d'or is wonderful and expensive, but so is the restaurant at Chat. Eza.
Never actually stayed in Avignon, but agree with Underhill, that the Hotel d'Europe gets excellent raves - and is also tres expensive.

My wife and I stayed at the Chevre D'or last summer and checked out some of the common areas of Chateau Eza and looked at the restaurant, but we didn;t see the rooms. I would have to say that we were absolutely amazed by the Chevre D'or. The grounds, garden, landscaping and pool were spectacular and private, so it was easy to get away from the crowds that visit the village everyday. Our room had a balcony with an unbelievable view - like a fairy tale. We also ate in the restaurant and had a wonderful meal - expensive but well worth it. Don't miss the cactus garden at the top of Eze.

We stayed at the Hotel d'Europe two years ago. Our room and the common areas were lovely and spacious, the location and valet parking were wonderful and the staff was helpful. We had an excellent dinner in the courtyard restaurant and would highly recommend the hotel and restaurant.

I stayed one night in the Europe. The staff was very nice. I had only booked the night before and I was staying acros the bridge in Villaneuve but needed to be there because at the time the TGV left for Paris from the station near the hotel. Dinner was lovely.
