EuroTrash

I've been confused by this ever since I first heard it. I hear it being ascribed to Miami which is not so full of Europeans now but rather people from S. America, so I'm dumbfounded. Has it come to have its own definition? Maybe those swastika-tatooed guys with spiked hair?

I don't know. You tell me. What is EuroTrash?

I believe it is a TV show. We saw it while we were in France. The same as white trash except in Europe.

The description of EuroTrash started when Europe's economy got good and formerly lower income family kids suddenly had money for cell phone, lots of gold jewelery, went to all night disco's, drugs etc.

That was when fellows started not shaving everyday, wore their shoes without socks etc.

Having a job was not something they were interested in.

The establishment was shocked. As adults usually are with the younger generation. They felt these younger people had no morals, lived to party etc.

Haven't heard the description for quite some time.

I never related it to skinheads.

I hear people use that term here in the islands to describe the young Europeans that come to this area to live on the beach and have enough odd jobs just to get by.

They are usually nomadic by nature, rarely wear shoes or shirts, don't seem to bathe daily, and just sort of get by while living in what they consider a tropical paradise.

I don't know if this is what the term means to a lot of people, but I know that's what it seems to be used for in describing some of the young European escapees who come to St. Maarten and St. Barth's to live.

In Boston Eurotrash was the term used to describe the very wealthy club going "students" who were in the city "to learn English." Very swish folks under the age of 25- term also covered the considerable number of middle eastern students.

Wow, three distinctively different definitions. First, there is the European definition that describes well-to-do Europeans who mimic young affluent Americans. Second, the islanders definition, which seems more apt, to describe Europeans who are low-rents. And third, the North American definition to describe non-Americans, not necessarily Europeans, who were upscale and did not welcome nor conform to American standards and culture.

That is very interesting. Anybody else?

My definition is close to highledges - Young wealthy Europeans who frequent night clubs and turn their noses up a Americans. The locals are not too pleased with some of their antics (ie. the rules don't apply to me - I'll park my Mercedes wherever I damn well please!).

I just want to add that I don't really use the term "Euro-trash" myself, and have actually befriended many of the people that I described above. I was only referring to how the term is used to describe in my area.

I agree that the defintions in various areas are quite interesting.

highledge is correct as to what it means here. It also includes alot of wealthy south Americans. The middle eastern clubbers buy bottles and bottles of expensive champagne.

Like Highledge's Boston, here in DC there are thousands of European and Middle Eastern 20 somethings with limitless cash and no job who spend most nights in swank nigtclubs (behind the velvet VIP rope thank you very much).

I think the "trash" part of the term refers to their spiritual life and humanity (or lack of it). Life seems to be about partying, spending money to impress, and obsessing about have the best clothes, car, phone, jewelry etc. These kids are not interested in helping others or in developing an inner life.

Statia's definition is how I've heard it used, for instance, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico.

Fancynancy, nothing about this discussion is a troll thread. you need to check the definition of troll instead of eurotrash obviously.

My impression was EuroTrash described more of an attitude and possibly fashion trend than an actual group of people.

The New Yorker once had a Bruce McCall cover that showed arrivals at JFK, grouped under signs marked "US citizens" (dutifully lined up at passport control) and "Eurotrash" -- drinking martinis, smoking, talking into cellphones, air-kissing....

I find this thread facsinating in that the term is used quite differently in different regions. I guess it really depends on where you are at.
