barsyd7: I wondered how much money I could take out per day with my debit card and Budman helped me out with that question. I went to two of my banks & one upped my daily limit to $800 and the other the limit was already $600. I plan to pay cash for my guesthouses and save some money by doing so. The down side is both banks charge $5 per transaction. I still think I'll save money this way. These guys really know what they are talking about. Heed them.

All credit card issuers run "velocity checks" on charges that would prevent a thief from taking more than a few hundred dollars before the card was automatically shut down. By that time (one hopes) you would notice it and cancel the card.

Velocity checks watch for unusual spending patterns that would indicate the card's owner isn't the one using it. In the US, the merchant terminal reads "CALL VISA" or the like. The clerk calls the center, where an operator verifies your identity and whether you're spending $6,000 at a jewelry store. This has happened to me. And it's also happened to customers of mine (I've been a credit card merchant since 1991).

I know this thread has been going on for awhile, but I want to confirm this before I leave Monday for Ireland.

1) The best exchange rate will be for changes to my credit card. (Around 1% for Capital One?)

2) European ATMS do not charge for their use by other bank members, but my bank does have a fee ($1.75 per transaction).

3) The exchange rate for dollars to euros at a hotel or bank, in cash, will likely be 8%-10% commission?

My plan is to bring some US cash for emergency conversion, plus my ATM card for cash. Bigger purchases will be on my credit card. Does this sound okay?

Hi K,

Check with your bank to see if they add foreign exchange fees, some add an additional 3%.

Everything else is correct.

One other thing -- Ireland is notorious for converting your charges directly into $$$ -- called Dynamic Conversion. If they do this, this will tack on an extra 3% to all your credit card purchases. Ensure all your credit card charges are in Euros only, or it will cost you.

Thanks for the reminders! Yeah, that "dynamic currency conversion" seems to be quite the scam in Ireland... we'll keep an eye on it!

Thanks again!
