"like those who arrest people and lock them up without trial"

Oh dear oh dear, I guess that gives a lot of us real difficulties when we have to go home...

a number of so called "leftist societies" in Europe have provided something the USA has never been able or wanted to:
health care for its citizens!

nbujic - I think the key word there may be wanted. Increased taxation to cover healthcare would probably never be a vote winner in the US.

Similarly, although widely criticized by many Americans, the European states that have extensive welfare systems do so because the inhabitants are happy to vote for, and pay for, such systems.

Judging by its treatment of "Australia's sole detainee in Guantanamo Bay, who's been held in solitary without charge for four years, my right-wing government seems to think that Magna Carta, habeus corpus and the Geneva Conventions are frivolous luxuries.'

Neil, if we let the scumbag out, will you agree to let him live at your house for awhile until he gets his terror network up and running again?

Interesting to know that someone who has not even had a trial can be labeled a scumbag in certain countries. In other countries, you could be taken to court for slander for saying such a thing.

trial! not even probably been told of the charges or evidence against them - let along being able to consult a lawyer in any meaningful way. Gitmo - very un-American at least in my definition of the term.

The guys at Club Gitmo are enjoying life. They are well fed -- special meals. When they check in they get a brand new Koran and prayer rug. Why, it's a tropical retreat from the stress of Jihad. All expenses, including transportation, paid for by the U.S. Taxpayer.

Unamerican indeed!
