Thanks for the link, 111op. I haven't had much time to do much else other than work lately.

cmt- other provinces that came to mind are Campania or Calabria, though that would mean a city ending with a "c" which I couldn't think of any.

Further hints: Other replicas of the sculpture are displayed in Norway and in North Dakota. The name of the the honored Viking starts with the R of restaurant. It has 5 or 6 letters (5 in English, 6 in the language of the present day country where that former Roman province is located).

I've not had the time to play with the trip planning, but I'm surprised that the able players haven't solved it yet. (I don't know what the answers are.)

Maybe all the usual able players are away, and new potential players aren't used to the game. We need some new players, or maybe we need some old players from last year to re-engage. (This game was started in July 2003.)

Ok, maybe the Viking ruler is Rurik?

I'm not about to attempt this game at 4am Seville time (really should go to bed), but let me top this thread.

May new players emerge.

111op-
My goodness you're addicted to this thread! Playing it at 4am all the way in Seville? Aren't you tired from your traveling? I guess you need sleep a lot less than I do.

cmt- How about another hint?

GIGANTIC hint: France

(Would anyone like to receive the answer via e-mail, so you can be the keeper of the answer and can tell when someone gets it? If so, I'll need an address. If the puzzle isn't solved soon, I won't be around to check for your answers for a long time.)

I think I finally figured it out:

1. Roman province: Neustria (present day Normandy)
2. Sculptor: Arsene Letellier
3. Rouen

The vikings ruler was Rollo (or Rollon). The other statues were in Fargo, ND and Ålesund, Norway.

cmt- Are you going on a trip soon?

Next Clue:
This town (4 words) in this region (8 letters) of this country (6 letters) was where the name "America" was first put on a map in the 16th century.

The town has been hosting an annual festival for the last 15 years, the most recent one was held just last week. This festival suits very well with the theme of this thread (maybe the players of this thread should organize a trip to this town next year! )

Name:
Town (4 words: 5,3,3,6; "n" is 4th letter of 1st word)
Region (8 letters, "n" is 7th letter)
Country (6 letters, "n" is 4th)
Festival (4 words: 13,8,2,9; "n" is 6th letter of 1st word)

"n" borrowed from Neustria

Yes, Turkey, and VERY soon. I'm VERY unprepared, because I really thought I was going to have to cancel, so didn't want to get all excited if I wasn't going to be able to go. But I decided a week and a half ago that I could still go and I'm not at all ready.

Puzzle answers: Saint Dié des Vosges, Lorraine, France.

Wow -- Turkey! Great! How long will you be there, cmt?

I love the free net access here at this hotel.

Sorry! I didn't have any time to get in the Internet at work yesterday, and my home computer has some problem and is in the repair shop, unusable since Thurs. night. I'm using the public library's computer briefly. (I'm getting off now.)

No time to plan--leaving tomorrow! I'll try to learn Turkish on the plane. (Ha!) Have to start packing, and do least minute shopping for some little things I can't find. (Kitten stole some things from my to-be-packed pile and re-located them. My dog never does that.)

YK--you can post another clue in my place. Bye!
