Interesting. Thanks grandmere. Now I vaguely remember reading something about it.

I became curious and went to PSO's website:

http://www.pittsburghsymphony.org/pg...f/mediaroombio

Apart from Andrew Davis, I really haven't heard of any of these -- but I wonder Tortelier is related to the famous cellist.

I also seem to remember reading somewhere that Daniel Barenboim is leaving the CSO -- he didn't like to deal with fund raising either. I don't know if his successor has been picked.

Anyway, many of these orchestras are not doing well financially. I think that PSO is in trouble, and so is CSO.

The first settlement on these islands, known today as (3, 9), in the New World was established by a nobleman from (6) (country). He renamed the islands the (5, 9) for the port (2,4)from which he set out.

The 6th letter of the second word of the renamed islands is (i), from the (i) in FoggIa.

It was Google-able, using French nobleman settling island, or something like that.

Must be losing my touch, I think.

Grandmere -- here's the NYT review of the Vienna Phil performances in case you're interested:

Thanks, 111; I read the one you mentioned above and will enjoy reading this one also. I coincidentally heard on our classical station 2 nights ago Jansons' final performance here in May; I attended that concert, and it was a memorable evening. Also very moving was his concert the weekend. after 9/11; he changed the program and chose Fanfare for the Common Man, Pathetique, and funeral march from Eroica.

What did he choose for his final concert in Pittsburgh?

Interesting program choices for the concert after 9/11.

That year the Berlin Philharmonic came with Abbado, and I was all excited to hear Mahler 7. They changed it to a Beethoven chestnut ("Pastoral," maybe?) at the last minute. Mahler 7 was deemed too grave. If I remember right, there was a free concert by Berlin or Vienna in St. Patrick's Cathedral, which I also went to.

Always a good choice!

(But I don't think that I've ever gone to a live performance of Beethoven 9 -- interesting when I think about it.)

I guess I'll see more of him next year -- the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra comes to Carnegie Hall every year (or nearly ever year) as well.

I'll create a new thread as I've filled this one up with a lot of idle chit chat.

grandmere is right. I figured her clues are usually France-related. It wasn't difficult to google it using French as a clue.

I'm not that smart.
