AND -- because you live in the UK why on earth do you want/need to bite off all of the EU in one ginormous trip, since you are a short train ride or budget flight from just about ANYWHERE in Europe . . . .

Give Jane a break, you're wasting HER time.
Of course it can be done.
Best way is Hitch hiking and backpacking. Only cost that remains is food - et encore - one can eat grass.
As for planning, well, just decide the day before where you go next day.

Yes, if she wants to eat grass and hitch hike around Europe it could be done. But I'm guessing that is not what Janey had in mind when she posted here.
