Ireland is great too but to see anything but Dublin you really need to rent a car... you need to consider if you feel comfortable driving in Ireland, it may not be best for your first trip as it is a little bit difficult. If you do Ireland though, conmsider Dublin and Dingle.

But if Dublin and the Dingle were you two places then you could easily do them both sans car - take the train from Dublin to either Killarney or Trallee and hop mini-bus tours from there that go around the wondrous Dingle Peninsula - Trallee has the most and is the closest.
From Killarney you also have Ring of Kerry excursions - the Ring being somewhat similar to Dingle.
Dingle area is one where Gaellic is still spoken in everyday life due to this area's traditional isolated, being basiclaly depopulated during the Potato Famine in 1800s and inhabitants largely immigrating or dying.
