pantelia...

WOW you must live down the street from me. I too live in Tarpon Springs. I went to Greece last year for 1st time and the sponge docks and shops here in Tarpon are very similar you definitely get that Greek feel. However, I haven't found one place here that makes a decent gyro....I grew up in the Chicago area and all my friends were of greek decent in fact mostly 1st generation and most owned restaurants and the gyros there are almost exactly the same as the ones I got in Greece last year. But there is a Greek butcher/grocer on Tarpon Ave almost to Alt 19 and they have real greek yogurt...I found it just today...

In Washington State some would say Leavenworth for a "Barvian feel", but I find it a bit laughable, though the mountains and hiking nearby are fabulous in their own right, but certainly it doesn't feel like Europe to me.

Last week we went to an Italian restaurant in Seattle hoping it might feel half as great as Paulo's place in Siena where I celebrated my BD last year, but oh boy, did it fall short (AND it was much more expensive!) DD was particularly disappointed when she told the owner (in Italian) that it was my BD and he didn't even bring out the sweet wine for desert! (Paulo joined us in Siena!) Oh well...

Vagabound...

Good friend of mine grew up in TS...and my parents regularly make the trip up from Palm Beach to get a feel of home (we lived in a fishing village in Brooklyn...very greek, italian, portugese feel). They love TS.

As for greek yogurt...I was just having a discussion the other day with a fellow traveller about being spoiled with European Yogurt. Two come to mind here in the states...if you can get your hands on them...you will love them.

The first: Liberte' important from Quebec....very similar to french/belgium/swiss yogurt.

The other: FAGE- GREEK ALL THE WAY...the stuff is almost like cream cheese. It comes plain, fat free (I would never think about putting that too my tongue) and plain with a side of honey.

STUFF IS GREAT!!!!!

Vagabond...

You must be speaking of Acropolis on Tarpon Ave, wonderful place, I used to go every Saturday with my mom and I often get my meat there now.

As for a decent gyro, try the Plaka on the Sponge Docks, down Dodacanese, past Athens St, I believe it's before Hellas. I'd stay away from Mr. Souvlaki, it's become too much of a touristy place since they moved to the bigger building!

pantelia...

Thanks, I will try it this weekend.

I live off Tarpon Ave and East Lake in Oak Hill Acres, just north of the Wentworth subdivison. We have 3 1/2 acres here.

North Beach in San Francisco brings back at least a sense of continental cafe culture -- for restaurants, I like A16 in the Marina; for pub culture, O'Neil's in San Mateo.

Well Guy, as close as I can get to Italy is to go over to my daughter and Rome born and bred SIL's house..it is like being in Italy, sigh. And there is one restaurant in our small city that is typical of restaurants in Italy. It is owned by two Italians, one whose grandparents and parents owned the Restaurante 622 Green St., in North Beach, SF, for decades. Did you ever go there annw? They sold out quite some time ago..it is now O'Reilleys (sp?) Irish Pub.
