Yes Ostbahnhof used to the Hauptbahnh before Berlin was divided - a main station whereas Frederickstrasse is basically a commuter station but qualifies as a main station here.

8. Manchester Liverpool Rd was used for the world's first loco-hauled railway between two major cities, and the first properly scheduled intercity railway service.

It's arguable whether it survives. I'm not sure, though, that the surviving buildings are older than those at Liverpool Edge Hill.

But of course, the train journey on 15/9/1830 started at Liverpool Crown St and finished at Liverpool Rd. Crown St's demolished: so Liverpool Rd has to be the oldest something in the world.

Mind you, Stockton and Darlington both still have stations...

And we have to take flanner for the definitive answer- wiki says Liverpool Rd oldest surviving train station -I was there several years ago and seemed old but may have been rebuilt-like often no clear answer -again Flanner obviously knows more than moi on this.

7. Berlin: the three long distance stations on the ICE line are Spandau, Hauptbahnhof, and Ostbahnhof. Südkreuz and Gesundbrunnen are also of some importance.

3. Florence: Of course their names have not "Florence" but "Firenze" in them;-) Firenze Santa Maria Novella, or short S.M.N., is the main station. Then there are Firenze Rifredi and Firenze Campo di Marte.

A terminus station is a dead-end station, while at a non-terminus station the tracks run through, entering from one side and exiting to the other.

I would argue that 'stairs' do not 'go' anywhere. A person can 'go' up or down them but the stairs 'go' nowhere. As the question itself has it, 'they never move.' ;-)

They "go" from one floor to another, in both directions.

As thursdaysd says the stairs go up to the floor above or down to the floor below but they don't move. An escalator moves.
It is a Christmas cracker riddle.

2. Tracks terminate in a dead end at terminus stations. Train services do not necessarily do so.
For example, the high-speed line from Berlin to Munich calls at Leipzig Central, which is a terminus. Same as Frankfurt or Stuttgart Central
The driver walks from one end of the train to the other. So the first car becomes the last car when the train pulls out of the station again.
