"A 3 day saver pass for four people is $768, not $650."
I paid $652 for the 3 day pass on RailEurope a month ago.<<<
Perhaps there was some type of sale when you purchased, but if you check prices today on RailEurope for a pass for four people, it will be $768 for the cheapest pass (the saver pass) and then you still have the ressie fees to add on.

Agreed, the Eurail pass raises each couple of weeks. If I've bought them earlier I would've paid about $550, it was $100 more when I purchased a month later.

No pass prices do not go up every few weeks but rather they are adjusted as to the relation between the euro and the dollar - prices go up and down throughout the year - like a roller coaster if exchange rates do - price increases or decreases mimic the value of the dollar to the euro or local currencies with other passes.
And there are specials that pop up - like last year when they gave an extra day to all Italy Eurailpasses for a limited time and now there is a 2 for 1 sale on Swiss Passes, etc.

In the old day of several years ago all railpass prices were set in stone for the year starting on Jan 1 each year and would rarely change until the next Jan 1 - this though has changed into a fluctuating price rise and fall as I mentioned.

I see fares as cheap as 50€ for random summer dates between Venice and Naples. Ditto for Naples/Monterosso.>
and my friends the key word here is 'random' - it is crazy to tailor your trip around random dates and the very few trains these much IMO over hyped 50 euro fares exist on - and exist now but perhaps not tomorrow. The beauty of a pass is that you can decide once there which train to take - any train IME as I have never not been able to use my pass on any train I wanted even on short notice (I have first class passes which makes that easier as 2nd class seats do sell out at times due to the online discounts, etc.
So do not tailor your trip around random dates IMO.

No one is proposing or even remotely suggesting someone tailor their schedule around "random dates" or why you would even imagine such a thing. It was only used in response to pookymimi as not all of her exact dates were listed. Your need to push 1st class passes on all train threads color all of your responses.

ditto to your need to push discounted and severely restricted 2nd class tickets on folks without even considering that some may want flexibility to chose which trains to take once there - something I have never seen you utter and you seem to think saving a few euros trumps everything else.
Your mantra that there is no difference between first and second class is nonsense IMO - there is a difference and that is why zillions of Italians consistently pay the extra for first class - why do you think there are so many seats in first class on every non-regional train - you seem to think that anyone paying extra for first class is daft - tell that to Italians who in large numbers think you are not correct and that there is a difference.
So we agree to disagree - you keep your mantra that there is no difference between first and second class seats and that anyone paying more for first class is an idiot - that is basically what you are saying over and over and also that anyone who wants flexibility is likewise. Do NOT judge a train ticket simply on cheapest fare - there are other things that some folks at least want - the not insignificant extra comfort in first class IME not insignificant desire to have flexibility as with full fare and railpasses to chose which trains to take once there. These are factors that you seem to totally discard. You do give an immnense amount of great info for folks wishing to go the cheapest way but you never say what those cheaper fares come with - never mentioning the restrictions of changing, refunds, etc and I think you should so folks realize what they are buying.

Bogus remark - I never push first class passes UNLESS a pass would cost less than regular first class fares someone would buy as they went along in Italy or even online at a discount rate. For you to say that I 'push 1st class passes on all train threads' is simply NOT true and I am perplexed, after reading my many posts, why you say that - I always mention the alternatives and trenitalia.com to compare prices.
Now I DEFINITELY do advocate first class travel for tourists on the trip of a lifetime - first class, which you obviously have no ridden in or you would not repeatedly claim there is basically no difference between it and 2nd class) has immense benefits over 2nd class - a much much more relaxed journey often - that is one reason there are so many first class seats on Italian trains that many Italians pay extra to ride in - yes you would think they are wasting their money as you have so often said. I say apply criteria to train travel that we apply to hotels or restaurants - you can eat perfectly well at McDonalds in Italy but do you?
Anyway please do NOT misquoate or mis-characterize my yes advocating first class travel - passes however are only warranted if they come close to saving money and I always point out the alternatives.
Caio caio!
