$500?! How big is your family anyway?? How many flights are you taking out of the UK and when did you buy your tix? First class maybe??
The tax is only on outgoing flights. Depending on when you bought your tickets you may have already paid the duty . . . . . (and some airlines have "eaten" the extra tax so you don't have to pay at all)

Doesn't take much to get to $500.
Say you're flying through the UK to Europe; and same way back. So, you pay the intra-Europe tax once (£10), and long-haul once (£40). That's $97.
5 in the family, and that's $485.
