English Manor Houses

This spring my husband & I will be travelling to England & as part of our trip would like a 1 or 2 night stay @ an affordable English Country House, perhaps in Bath or Windsor. Any suggestions OR helpful websites? Thanks,

Before we can give any sort of useful advice, we need to know what you consider "affordable"

Also what do you mean by "country house?". It may seem obvious to you, but definitions of these sorts of things often differ wildly.

Homewood Park is near bath and is lovely - but it ain't cheap.

Our favorite, Plumber Manor, is located about 1 hour from Bath. We've stayed here for years , just for the lovely peaceful surroundings and the excellent food.

If you are feeling flush, you may like to try Ston Easton, which is part of the von Essen group. There is a hotel dog which specialises in taking guests on a tour round the grounds. You should be aware that "country house" hotels may be lacking in amenities like lifts (elevators to you).

Ston Easton can be found at www.stoneaston.co.uk.

Affordable - $250 US per night. We'd like a house w/ grounds/gardens, pretty common rooms, of course private baths. Thanks for any advice

$250 is only about £122. That's not much for a posh country house hotel - especially near Windsor or Bath. Just a regular run-of-the-mill hotel will run that much.

I'd look for an upscale B&B instead. Like this one

The Bath Spa Hotel (it is a Gregorian Mansion) is a priceline hotel, you can bid and it's the only 5*. There's a possibility you will win it for less than $250/nt. It has the ammenities you are looking for. Go to www.biddingfortravel.com if you don't know how to use Priceline or want to find out more info.

I stayed there several years ago on a non-priceline stay and it's pretty amazing, definitely 5*. You can easily walk into town (just a few minutes away) and the hop on/off bus tour stops there also.

If you check priceline itself, the are no 5* hotels in Bath.(biddingfortravel's hotel lists are quite out of date. I think Sheryl has about abandoned it) 2 stars is all PL offers.

W/o Priceline, the Bath Spa will run about £250 to £600 a night.

Another suggestion that "ain't cheap" is Oakley Court Hotel just outside of Windsor, if you decide to splurge.

This one seems to meet your criteria: http://www.manorhousebath.co.uk/visit.html

NB: I haven't stayed here myself.

This past June our family stayed in the Bath area at the Eagle House in Bathford. http://eaglehouse.info/
This lovely English Manor is rated the number #1 Hotel in Bath on TripAdvisor. It is about a five minute drive from the heart of Bath and removed from all of the chaotic traffic we experienced in Bath.

Our rate at the end of June for a double ensuite, including VAT and a breakfast of home-baked croissants, a variety of breads, cereals, fresh fruit, yogurt, tea/coffee, and freshly squeezed orange juice was 74 GBP (about $148 per night). You could also have a cooked to order breakfast for an additional 4.95 GPB.

The home and grounds are absolutely lovely, the hosts are most pleasant. They have about 10 rooms ensuite, including several rooms in a private walled garden cottage. The rooms are nicely decorated in a "Laura Ashley" coordinated style with nice bed linens and towels. One thing to note is that this is a B&B - the host and his family do live in the manor house.

There is also an FANTASTIC restaurant about 5 minutes up the hill in South Wraxall called the Longs Arms Tavern. This is a small country pub and they pride themselves on creating their menu daily based on what is available and in season at the local farms. Over the course of our three nights we enjoyed some amazing lamb chops, pork chops, beautiful salads, wonderfully tender steak, fresh bangers, delightful desserts. There was not one thing that we ordered at that restaurant that we didn’t absolutely love. The food was so fabulous we couldn't bear to eat dinner anywhere else during our stay. Just Wonderful!!!!! Dinner for six, including non-alcoholic beverages for five and a nice wine for one, averaged about $240.00 or 120 GBP per night.

Try Tylney Hall, not far from Heathrow but out in lovely countryside. There's a wide range of rooms, and the ground are really beautiful.
