I would visit Warwick. It is a fairly "young" castle I think and it is in remarkable shape. They have a great tour and you get a real feel for the castle life. There are wax figures and period furniture. I thought it sounded like it would be hokey but I was very pleasantly surprised. It is a short distance from Stratford on Avon. I would also visit the Tower of London and take the beefeater tour. Windsor Castle was really interesting also and worth the train ride from London. I don't remember the exact location, I think it's Somerset, a small castle in the town of Dunster. It was one of my favorites. The town is quaint, the castle beautifully restored and the gardens are full of many exotic plants and trees. There are great castles in Wales - Conwy in the north and Cardiff. Edinburgh is also worth a train ride. There are some pretty good books about the castles that should be a good help.

My wife, two teenage daughters and I were in Britain for a month last summer and took in quite a few castles. The previous response from Cindy says much of what I would: Warwick is great for being well preserved and having interesting displays, Winsdor for being Windsor, and the Tower of London for its tours and artifacts. All, however, are crowded in the summer. Wales has fascinating castle ruins that are fun to explore on your own. There is a web site called "Castles of Wales" that you should check out. If you like other types of ruins, there are many old abbeys from the days of Henry VIII, a most impressive one being Tintern Abbey in southern Wales. We stopped there on the way to some nearby castles and were very impressed. If you plan on visiting a lot of historic sights during your stay, Stonehedge, etc., you may want to buy one of the Heritage passes sold through the British Tourist Authority. Ours paid for themselves - but we're really into history. Have fun!

I toured the UK last summer for nearly 1 month. We missed Windsor due to Diana, Princess of Wales death (it closed during mourning) but saw many, many in Scotland, Wales, Rep. of Ireland and England. Look into R. Steves and Fodor's books recommending castles, etc. As far as London is concerned, you could spend many days and nights just seeing this lovely city and it's historic sites. Crowds, yes, but we took Rick Steves advice, planned our days (while in London) , took the tube (so EASY) 1st thing each am and saw the Tower of London before the tour bus crowds arrived (make a b-line for the Jewel House first) then caught up with the Beefeater of the day tour. We also were on our own to see Buckingham Palace. Don't miss this tour for I fear when the ruins of Windsor are paid for, they will close Buckingham P. to the public again. I recall the tickets themselves are beautiful. ENJOY! Oh, yes, Cardiff Castle is a must see inside. We were with a large tour group for this one so I don't know how it is arranged.

For sheer beauty, do not miss Leeds Castle in southern England. If you are golfers there is a course adjacent to the castle which you can play and get many perspectives of the Castle area that way (I did this myself. Scotland has some of the most beautiful castles of all. Most notable from a scenic perspective is Eilean Donan Castle on the Road to the Isles, and more interesting from a royal connection basis are Glamis Castle, ancestral home of the Queen Mother, Balmoral, summer residence of the British royal family, and Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh. If you have a car the neat thing about England is there is a castle around just about every turn in the road!

Dover Castle is magnificent and has a beautiful view of the English Channel. The castles in Wales are really spectacular. My favorite was Harlech. It seems that you climb a million steps to get to it, but is is worth it. Others worth seeing in Wales are Caernarfon and Beaumaris.
